Last night we found a cat roaming the hallways of our apartment building. Its tag just had a phone number (which turned out to be for a local shelter) and an ID number. We knocked on our neighbors doors and the cat didn't belong to anyone who answered and there were a few people who didn't answer.

So, we brought the cat upstairs and set up some stuff in our bathroom- food, litterbox, left the Drinkwell in there because it was easier than moving it and a bed that Albus and Luna don't really use.

The cat looked healthy enough, but I still kept it separated from Albus and Luna. The closest they got is when Albus shoved his way into the bathroom and ran straight for the cat's food, which she'd taken a few bites of already. I am 99% sure that I washed my hands in between touching the cat and touching Albus and Luna.

This morning I called the shelter's number and they figured out who the cat belonged to- turns out it was one of my neighbors who didn't answer (I think she was outside looking for the cat). Awhile later, my neighbor called me at work (the shelter gave her my number) and I talked to her- she thinks the cat just ran out the door while she was bringing some stuff in from the car. She told me about the cat, how she got it from this shelter, a different one than the one I volunteer at and how dirty it was. She asked if I was keeping the cats separated because this cat has eye herpes.

Like I said, I kept them apart except for Albus breaking and entering, and I'm pretty sure I washed my hands in between touching them. How worried should I be? I'll wash the bedding in hot water and throw away the food and litter. Is the Drinkwell still safe, if I dump out the water and clean the cleanable parts (which I need to do anyway)?

I just got home and my neighbor should be him from work in a little while and will come get the kitty, but meanwhile, I'm a little freaked!

I don't know how contagious ocular herpes is in general, but I do know that one of my cats had it for 11 years and my other three cats never got it! It never occurred to me to separate them, and all it caused in my calico was runny eyes, nothing much worse.

I'm sure others with far more experience will weigh in soon. In the meantime, try to not to worry. You could start giving your cats lysine just in case. It won't hurt them and definitely can help with herpes.

If your cats are healthy and don't already have compromised immune systems and they've had the FRVCP vaccine at some point in their lives, they're probably fine. Most herpes symptoms seem to manifest as either eye problems or URIs. Be sure to keep them separated until the visitor goes home and wash your hands after petting.

As long as your cats are vaccinated and healthy, the should be fine. Taking normal hygienic precautions is good, anyway, of course.

I hope your neighbor will be more careful with her new kitty now. this could have ended in a much worse scenario.

I agree, your cats are probably going to be just fine!

I have a herpes cat and my other 3 cats sleep with her, groom her, share a water fountain, eat from the same bowl, etc, etc...and none of them have been affected! I do give all of them Lysine daily, just to be on the safe side, of course, but as long as your cats have healthy immune systems, I wouldn't worry.

I recently read that 90% of cats have been exposed to the herpes virus anyway! It's just that most of them are not affected by it.

Good luck, and good for you for taking the kitty in and getting her back to her owner, and also for keeping her separated from your own!
No worries!
