Why is it that cats suddenly decide to attack new things? OK I'm not wording this right. Why do they decide, after months or longer, that they suddenly want to go get at something they never bothered ever before?

I have what is actually a desk organiser on my nightstand by the bed, with my glasses, lotions, chapstick, etc in it to try to reduce the appearance of junk piles.
I also have a glass of water on the nightstand, and a glass of water for Genever. So she often jumps on the table and drinks her water at night. Last night, or rather this morning (4:30AM), she all of a sudden decided to start messing with the organiser and stealing my chapstick! She never ever in the almost 1 year we've had her touched anything besides her water glass on there! This time though she was DETERMINED to steal my chapstick. I kept whisper-yelling at her to get down, she'd jump down, then I'd get settled in the covers again, and she'd be right back up there batting things. After about a half hour of this I finally just dipped my fingers in her water glass and splashed her in the face, then she finally stopped. I am very much hoping she won't do it tonight, but I have a feeling she will...

Do your cats ever just all of a sudden begin a new habit or develop a sudden fascination with random, things/places?

W/ the best cats
Sure! Another good example is how often they change their napping spots around the house.

Trapped in the catroom! ;o)
Try having two cats who like to attack you or the laundry when your trying to fold it or put it away. My other favorite is right after I take it out of the dryer and put it on the bed to fold they all decide that is the Puuurrrfect napping spot!! Nothing like having your clothes full of cat fur before they make it on the hangers!

Oh I have the clean laundry problem too. Who wouldn't want to jump in a pile of warmth??
I'm taking about doing somethething completely new and unexpected- did your cats just suddenly start jumping on the laundry pile after years of never paying any attention to it? That's the part that gets me. My stuff on my night table has been there longer than the cat, and she never bothered with it, even though she jumps on the table to drink her water, before 2 nights ago. Why now????

By the way she didn't bother with it last night. LUCKY GIRL!!

The laundry thing was never an issue or problem till we adopted GiGi in the summer. Once she started doing a mass of quirky weird things the other two just started right along with her. She has corrupted my boys lol!!! Hercules never played or nothing before but every once in a while he does burn outs on the bed and spins his tires going in circles. Fatman used to be a sweet clingy lovey dovey boy but has now gotten into a mood swing of being nice to the dog and as soon as the dog gets close whacks the heck out of his head and sends him running...They are all being goofy right now and next week it will be something different with all three

Mira likes to "help" make the bed. Making the bad takes about an hour here because she is contantly jumping under whatever blanket I'm trying to throw into position or attacking it in mid-air.

My cats just discovered the kitchen cupboards and drawers. Kipper was the only one who knew how to open them (he can open a Pet Taxi from the inside if the bars are wide enough to fit his paws through, so this is a piece of cake for him). I think the other cats must have studied how he does it and now they all know how to do it too. Most of them don't really go inside but seem to be more fascinated with just the act of opening them. Kipper also just figured out how to open my closet. It has the kind of doors that fold in half but they stick, and sometimes even I have difficulty opening it but a flick of a claw Kipper's in! Bird cages too, the parrot proof ones where you have to lift the lever up and down several times while sliding it out. Found that out the hard way. Hence why I don't keep birds. Amazing the things cats can learn.

Neko started a weird thing this week. "Un-burrying" the water bowl before she starts drinking! OCD?!
