Schedule feeding cats while you're away?

Just wondering, how do you manage to take a vacation when your cats:

a) schedule feed 3X a day, dry and wet...CANNOT free feed

b) are each eating different foods and MUST BE SUPERVISED while eating

c) CANNOT be kept separate while you're away

d) are too shy to eat in front of a cat sitter/stranger

????

I board my girls whenever I leave. They stay together in the same pen and they have supervised, scheduled feedings. I have never had a problem with the boarding place even with the scheduled feedings and their special litter. Everything seems to go well.

We usually hire a petsitter who comes into our house to feed the cats & clean the litterbox twice a day. It's a little pricey, but is well worth it for the peace of mind it gives us. She even gets our mail, spends quality play time with them, puts lights on & off. Good luck!

Wow you have a real challange with your cats. The only thing I can suggest is that your cat sitter or whoever will be coming in, comes in well ahead of time and gets to know the cats so they are not so "strange" and will eat when they are there!

Hmm...I'm not sure I would be comfortable with boarding them...but I will think about it. It sounds like it works out well for you. I bet it's expensive though.

A good idea, although I don't know if I could trust a stranger coming into my home. And I would want them to come three times a day...don't know if they'd do that.

I'd probably feel uncomfortable with either boarding or hiring a petsitter....plus there is the factor of the cats not eating in front of strangers.

That's why I'm thinking of having family members do it rather than a petsitter. The one cat would still be shy eating in front of them, but at least they all know the person (and I know that nobody will just take off with my things). I could enlist three people to come over once a day at different times, or one person to come over three times a day...depending on their schedules and abilities to help.

I would definitely try to get the person you are going to have to it visit quite a bit before the vacation if you can!

If you pay them, they will come. They're petsitters, that's what they do.

For my first vacation, I hired a petsitter at $17 per 1/2 hour and he came daily. Since then I have used a friend who is a PhD student and she's got a pretty flexible schedule. I trust her completely and in turn I help her out in her struggling student situation. I pay her $25 per day, yes, it does add up when I'm away for 12 days or so...and I took two 12 day vacations last November and December. On the other hand, for $25, she usually stays about an hour and if her schedule is free, will occassionally stay for 3 or 4 hours. That really helps dial down my concern and guilt for staying away for so long. Especially since one of my cats is really social. And my cats love her to boot.

And again, she is someone I trust and would totally feel fine with her on my computer, eating from my fridge, sleeping over, etc. In the ideal world, of course, I'd love to have a family member take care of my cats for free...but my family either lives across the continent or overseas (that's why I took two 12 day vacations recently).
