Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone could help me (as I don't remember this with my other cat). Got a new kitty Friday he is fixed and adorable, anyway I noticed when he uses the litter box that his urine smells, and I mean smells to the point where the litter box is on the second floor and it hit me when I came through my front door. Could it be because he was recently fixed? He is drinking water, and does have a first check up at the vet tomorrow, just wondering if I am missing something. The smell actually is turning my stomach (could also be because I have a headache too). Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If he is an adult male who was recently fixed, that is why. It takes a while for the hormones to settle down after being neutered. Nothing worse than tomcat urine smell!
It will eventually return to normal.

Thanks, it was driving me crazy. I kept telling my husband "he" must be peeing all over the place. I thought I was going out of my mind. Thanks again, I am looking forward to that smell going away (can't go soon enough for me). He is adjusting well. He sleeps alot but I am thinking it's because he is still recovering from the surgery too (was done on the 7th). Thanks Again

I went through this same thing back in February; I'd adopted a 1.5 yr old male from the Humane Society, and he'd been neutered about 5 days prior. I had no experience with such old males being neutered so was totally freaking out by the strong smell of his urine, it was horrid, I think I scooped his box 4 times a day because it was so foul LOL. But yes, just his hormones settling down. The smell did definitely settle down, can't remember how long it took......2 weeks it was a lot more bearable. Not long after that it wasn't bad at all.

You mentioned that he's been sleeping a lot. Eating okay? Drinking okay? Peeing and pooping okay? Generally cats bounce back from being neutered pretty well. If you feel he's still sleeping a fair bit in a couple of days I'd pop him into the Vet for a check-up. Perhaps it's just the stress of being in a new environment? Do you have other cats or pets that might be stressing him?
