I was just chatting with a friend I ment online 13ish years ago, and he just called me a GEEK!!!
That's a good thing to me and my friends/family. I am curious how many geeks hang here at TCS.

Do you call yourself a geek?
What makes you a geek?

I got called a geek cuz I was excited about getting a new power cord for my atari 2600 that my dad bought when I was a little kid. We will be having an Atari fest soon
All my friends come over, we play atari, and eat stuff that reminds us of when we were kids.

Other things that people call me a geek for:
I own the 3 seasons of Star Trek TOS (Omg SPOCK IS HOT!!
)
I have a Spock doll. I collect anything with that sexi likeness of that hotty vulcan

I own the original Hitchhiker's guild to the galaxy (from 1981 bbc mini series)
I own the new HHGTTG movie.
We are decorating our bathroom to show our love for Star Trek and HHGTTG.
I still have every gaming system (and games) that I have ever got (NES, SNES, N64, Game Cube, sega/genesis/Cd, Sega Saturn, No PS, but I have all my games, OLD GB, GBC, GBA, GBASP, no DS)
I've loved Final Fantasy since 1993.
I've loved EA/MAXIS/WIll Wright, since 1993. (I have almost all the sims games ever made on different platforms)
I have Star Trek song as my ringtone for my hubby (Someone was waying they were a bigger trekki then me when my hubby called, and they didn't have that ringtone, as well as one of the sound of the communicator opening!)
I have a communicator (unfortunately it isn't real)

Um... I know there is more but I am already bored with trying to figure out why people call me a geek!

Back to loving my cutie manxie girl who is running all over the house and calling her daddy human.

Are you a geek? Why?
I know I am not the only one out there.

Be safe.

You're not truly a geek until you've seen all the Dr. Who episodes, all the Red Dwarf episodes, and know the reference in Galaxy Quest to Red Dwarf.

I am not a geek although I've been called a nerd before. I get a little too excited over seemingly academic/boring topics sometimes and when I'm in class (depending on the class) I get excited at learning a little too much..
A lot of my friends are geeks, and sometimes communicating with a geek can be a bit of a challenge

Also a lot of my geeky friends always make references to movies and I get a little irritated because I feel like, well, we've all seen the movie and they should get over it
But among certain people it's like a joke of some kind, quoting and referring to movies or TV shows..it can drive me nuts.

I didn't know that quoting movies was a geek thing... Wow... Yeah, me n my friends are always quoting movies. A situation will arise and a line from a movie will pop in my head, and I will say it. It's always more fun when the person you are with knows the line well, and can say the next line.

RedDwarf... I've seen an episode or few of that show. I didn't get to watch it much because we didn't have cable that long, and I am sure that wasn't exactly an American show. My brother really loved that show. It came on while I was at work, but I did watch a few episodes when I was off.

Be safe.

Does attending several Trekcons and being able say Vegan Choreomeningitis and Xenopolycythemia without tripping up count as nerdy?
Getting all the autographs of the TOS stars (except Shatner) count? Having Jimmy Doohan give you permission to make copies of a pic of him and sell them? (Honest, he did give me permission!)

Remembering the names/plots of episodes within seconds of an episode starting...

Yes, I guess I qualify as a Trek geek (but not as a gaming geek or technology geek).

I am currently trying to complete my Trek DvD collection. I have all the movies, season 3 of Voyager, and a couple of "Best Of" Dvds.

Also hoping to work on my Beauty and the Beast TV series DvD collection this year.

You don't have a Dreamcast? There were some nice games on it, though a lot didn't make it over here.
Aside from everything you listed we have a Jaguar and the cd adapter for it.. and 2 2600's. All the newer systems, though the wii is never played.. The regular xbox is modded. There's also a couple boxes of spare system parts from when DH was modding.

I don't know where I would be. The game system collection is DH's, the extra computers and parts around here are mine. My main christmas gift this year was a new hard drive.
(wanted to put my old one up and switch distros - and to the sid branch of debian)

I never really got into tv or movies much.
Though I have seen pretty much every single episode of the original Star Trek, NG, several seasons of DS9, a few of Voyager (then it got stupid). Most of the movies, etc.

and more of a geek if you know what Craig Charles is doing now and watch and wonder what happened to the slightly built David Lister. You should also keep up, if possible, with actors from the Doctor Who if possible, not that I have any intention of checking out what Sylvester McCoy is now doing. Have caught Tom Baker in several shows - he is long flowing brunet locks are nos snow white and shortish and he packed on the pounds, and honestly, I prefer his more recent stints.

I have watched every episode of the original Star Trek and most of Next Gen, Did Star Wars, but the new stuff just hasnt the charm of the old movies.

Geekdom also includes watching retro cartoons (Bugs Bunny, Yogi Bear), re-runs of some of the more odd series of bygone days (My Favourite Martian, My Mother, The Car, etc) and being able to pull lesser known shows out of the proverbial hat for Trivial Pursuit. One must also pick one or two subjects out of the realm of entertainment and become obsessed about them, reading every bit of material one can find. A good knowledge of pop culture also helps drive one into geekdom.

As a self proclaimed geek, I taught myself how to edit photos, work with most types of office software, work a computer well enough to teach others and diagnose most puter problems. Same geek can barely manage a cell phone however - it is a tool, nothing more and I have no desire to use it as more than a phone and sometimes camera. Took me months to sort out how to set ringtones and more months before I discovered it had an alarm clock built in.

I guess I'm kind of a geek, probably more of a nerd. I've seen all the Star Treks, from the original all the way to DS9 and most of Voyager. A life-size figure of Captain Picard stands in our computer room....I keep wanting to take him into my office at work, but am afraid of what my boss might think. Have seen all the ST movies as well as the most recent. Have been to three conventions, but never....and I repeat, never, attended in costume. Oh, and I have the official Klingon dictionary in my library. As well as several of the "communicator" pins. I have autographs of all of the members of ST-TNG, except for Patrick Stewart's.

I watched My Favorite Martian! Still do if I can find it. And remember the Time Tunnel?

As for computers, I know enough to be dangerous. Most of the time, I can help my friends with their computer problems and I can't really remember the last time I needed help with something I couldn't fix. When my old computer's fan died, I went to Ebay, bought a new one and threw it in. That computer still works. I understand software problems for the most part, although Kaspersky threw me for a loop for awhile when I installed it.....my GF's husband had to help with me that.

I can operate and set-up my DVD player....don't laugh. I know people who can't. Got my cell phone set-up and working by myself. And my Ipod. And our digital cameras.

Definitely a Trivial Pursuit genius....yes, I am, except for the Sports one. And TriBond. Love TriBond.

Loved my geology classes and my soils classes in college, much to the dismay of my classmates.

I think that's it.

Does being good with technology make you a geek? I used to be pretty good at fixing computer problems, I knew how to reinstall and troubleshoot my OS when I was 11, well there is info online on how to fix everything so it's mostly a matter of finding the right info..I guess it's the way I've been brought up to rarely call technicians and such and always try to do everything yourself if possible

Since I've been dating my boyfriend who is a computer science major, I rely on him for all of my computer needs, and since I don't have to do anything myself anymore I don't know as much..

This year my hubby got me the best valentine's gift in the world!!! An external drive. It's a terrabyte and a half (I don't even know how to spell that, shame on me!!!)

I've never been to a trekkie convention
I am from wyoming, and I don't get to go to super cool stuff.

I love reading interviews with the TOS cast. I HATE that song on youtube that Leonard Nimoy did about Hobbits. I get teased with it whenever a certain friend (our DM with all of his original DnD books purchased when he was in school he's 40 now) comes over. I watched the video once, and I cannot bring myself to think about it again!!

I love Saturday morning cartoons!!!! I wish they still had them. I am trying to find Dvds of all those cartoons to add to my collection.

We do have 2 atari 2600s (we will need 2 since they are only 2 player for our atari fest) I just know where ONE cord is, the one I just bought!! The other one is in my sister in law's basement, with my sega and controllers. I wasn't impressed so much with Sega's games list. I did like the sonics, and I did like some of the sega cd games (when they were new... gfx at that time!!) I still love my super nintendo and games, SNES had great games. FF6 IMO is the best. Great story line
I started Final fantasies on GB, I have them all (for old game boy) and all that came out on gba. I also have some FF's for playstation.

I think I am more of a gamer geek then any other geek, but I do fall into other categories. I am also a slave to my video game collections. ANY Time I see a sega cd game somewhere, I have to buy it. UNLESS I already have more then one copy of that spacific game, lol.

I'm about to go back to playing some CoH. My account is 5 years old, and my WoW account is 4 years, maybe I am working on my 5th year.

I wish I had Leonard Nimoy's autograph. I love him. He's got such a great voice, then again so does George Takei. I loved the episode where everyone went crazy, and he was running around fencing, with no shirt on.
OMG Spock... crying? That was a great episode. Any episode where you see a different spock is my fave!!!!!

I did enjoy the movie. I especially loved when I got to see TWO SPOCKS in one scene!!! OMG!!!!

I am loving all the replies!! So many things I didn't think of when I posted this thread that everyone else has said!!!

Be safe.

Sega systems had some great games. But it depends on the type of games you preferred. For a while Nintendo was wanting family type games - so you'll see a lot of platformer type games on it. (there's also a ton of bad licensed games) Just like how wii has a bunch of stupid family/mainstream games now and very few really good ones. Sega systems had a lot of fighting games. DC has a lot of well, just about every genre. Especially dating sims....

Winchester - A fan? A fan is nothing. I have a whole box of spare fans somewhere in my gecko room closet. (there was a sale)

exactly!! I'm an RPGer. I know there were a few RPGs on Sega, but not many. If anyone knows any titles to sega RPGs for the genesis or sega cd. I would have to hunt them down and buy them

I did like the MKs though, and street fighters... those were way FUN!! Mileena and kitana were my girlz.

In A.D. 2101 war was beginning.

What happen?

Somebody set up us the bomb.

We get signal. What?!?!

Main screen turn on.

How are you gentlemen?

All your base are belong to us.
You are on your way to the destruction.

What you say?!?!?

You have no chance to survive make your time.

HA! HA! HA! HA!

Captain!!

If you thought Leonard Nimoy's Hobbit song was bad, you REALLY must listen to WIlliam Shatner's Lucy in the Sky. Warning, keep earplugs handy just in case!!!

Geek, Nerd? Definitely!

Jan, I too know most of the names of the episodes of the original Star Trek. My hubby just laughs. I made up a Star Trek drinking game in college. (Well, I'm from Wyoming, that's what you do there, LOL). Did it bother anyone else that Chekov was in the newest movie? Named my daughter loosely after a Star Trek actress.

I just took a game design and development course at the local community college. I was the only girl, and the oldest there, too!

Trivial Pursuit is the bomb! Except that stupid orange category. Except sometimes they ask questions about drinking or card playing and I luck out! The only time I ever lost was to my hubby when I was in labor.

Aw, Katie, we love dorks,too.

Just remembered my comic geekdom. Only made it to one comicon - Chicago Comicon 1990, but collected DC's Legion of SuperHeroes for 20+ years.

Also into Teen Titans and once got a phone call from comic artist George Perez.

Had to give up my active collecting due to lack of funds.

I've been told I'm a nerd on many occasions, but not in the typical way. I'm kinda weird lol

-I'm definitely a photography nerd, and I ALWAYS have my camera on me.
-I could watch Discovery and The History Channel ALL DAY (and I have before). They're the only channels on tv I really watch.
-I'm extremely awkward in social situations
-I love making websites and playing around on photoshop
-I dress kind of awkwardly
-I LOVE space and astronomy, which definitely runs in the family. My uncle works with satellites, and my grandpa was a physicist who built the first camera that went to the moon.
-I can beat just about anyone in Mortal Kombat
-I'm a total homebody. Despite being a sophomore in college, I never party. -I'd rather stay at home and watch Antiques Roadshow with my kitty.
-I was a huge theater geek back in high school
-I get really excited when it storms, and I love learning about tornadoes and other natural disasters.
-I'm a MAJOR music nerd, which definitely runs in the family.
-I'm obsessed with aquatic mammals
-I sometimes snort when I laugh
-I read through my entire psychology textbook before the semester even started
-and also, people kind of find this weird, but I have a HUGE fascination with serial killers and crime.

I love geeks!! and dorks!! My hubby's a big dork.

Today I've spent the day putting up what looks like stone wall paper in the basement. Yesterday my father in law and I went to the REsell store and got two doors. The two doors will be laid on our bed, and we will play DnD in our bedroom, using our bed as a huge table for gaming
It's fun to DnD in a room that looks like it is made of stone. I just have to set up speakers and a spot for my laptop so we can have our gaming music.

I'm pretty excited.

Be safe.
