Dirty litter disposal

Usually when I'm just scooping the litter, we put the waste in old grocery bags. While it's convenient, I always feel bad throwing away so many plastic bags that could be recycled.

I've seen people mention biohazard cans as a way to keep it around in an airtight container, which would be perfect if it weren't for the price (the cheapest one on google shopping goes at 43 dollars on ebay )

Does anyone have something that works for them that's a little more environmentally friendly?

We don't have plastic grocery bags here, I use bio-degradable nappy bags. I use wood pellets, the wet pellets turn to dust which is put in the composter and used for mulch in the garden.

I use World's Best litter, which is corn based. We flush the waste then spread the old litter on the yard when we change the boxes.

I use the old grocery bags too. We live out in the country so we burn everything. We also have an EXTRA LARGE burn pile up in a field where our landlord has us burn wood and whatnot stuff from redoing the barns and stuff. What I do is just scoop the litter boxes and use an old plastic Tidy Cats container and store the bags in there till its full *takes about a week sometimes more* and then throw the bags up in the big burn pile. Its full of trees and old barn wood that wasnt good to use for burning in our house *we have a wood stove for heat* or that we couldnt use to build book shelves. About 4 times a year after a good snow or rain we burn that big pile down. It works for us because being in the middle of nowheresville we dont get garbage people that come out this far *because everyone burns garbage* and we arent banned from burning except on Sundays. We do practice as much recyling as we can. All metal stuff and glass is washed and put in seperate containers and then hauled off twice a year to the scrap yard for extra money and my old coffee containers and glass jars are used by BF to put screws nails and misc. car stuff he needs. I know most people dont have that option but I guess for us in the boonies its an option to burn icky litter.

I will also use the bio-degradable nappy bags or if I end up not having the money, I use the ziplock bags. No smell comes out of them and I throw it away after 5 days.
