Cat Pee Over Dog Pee?

I am very familiar with peeing outside of the litter box. But my question is, will a cat pee over dog pee?

We had my BIL over and he brought his dog. We think the dog may have peed on our couch. Not totally sure. The couch was wet when we woke up the next morning.

I just found that one of my cats peed on the couch as well. I'm not positive if it's the same cushion or not, since my kids take the cushions out and rearrange them all the time.

So is it possible one of the cats peed there to pee over the dog pee? Or should I be questioning a UTI or something like that?
I'm not sure which of my 3 cats it was. I have a 1 yr old cat and 2 5 month old kittens.

Thanks!

UTI is always possible, but urine is urine to some cats. And a strange animal's urine (scent) is something that would make a lot of cats want to cover it with their own smell.

Get a good enzyme cleaner and start sniffing cushions closely - if you're nose isn't good enough, ask someone with a more sensitive nose. Treat the spots that have the faintest urine smell, or any strong scent. Then use a shampooer on the whole couch to clean it up. Better yet, make the BIL help since his dog contributed.

Hi there. I think they do want to cover up the scent of dog pee with their own. When we bought our house, the previous owners neglected to tell us they not only had a big dog, but it was down in the finished basement most of the time.

When we moved in, our cat Duck started peeing on the carpet down there in one particular area. We had her checked for a UTI, had the carpet cleaned with everything you can imagine, even blocked the area off. Nothing worked, she kept peeing there. Finally, we decided to remove a large portion of the carpet and install hardwood.

When we pulled up the carpet, we found several old stains on the subfloor. They were definitely there for a long time, but in the same area that Duck was peeing. When we pulled off the baseboard, the crowbar sunk into the drywall like it was butter.

We had to cut 18" up from the floor in two different places - it was that soaked with dog pee. We almost passed out from the smell! We replaced the drywall after bleaching behind it and sealing it, and we sealed the subfloor before putting down the hardwood.

We are actually thankful to Duck for peeing there, she saved us a lot of money since one area was starting to mold. I firmly believe it was the old dog pee that made her do it. Oddly enough, she was the only one of our cats I caught peeing there.

I would not be surprised at all if that's why your cat peed on the couch. Some good enzyme cleaner should help, and someone here recommended the scent of citrus on the area since cats hate that smell.

Good luck to you! :-)

More than likely just covering the scent, as mentioned above clean all the cushions really well in enzyme cleaner

That's my job for a friend She has several dirty girls (reg. breeder) and I get to sniff out the pee when her sons let them inside, lucky me

Thanks guys. I took apart the 1 cushion that smelled and did find the pee spots on the batting above the foam. It actually didn't go thru the batting, so I was lucky! I didn't want to replace the foam! So it must have been one of the kittens since it was such a small spot.

I have the cushion casing soaking with enzyme cleaner. I think we'll be able to save the couch and get it all out. Yay!

THanks again!
