We have a long haired Ragamuffin and he seems to be sick everytime we feed him anything other than his hair-ball nutrition catfood.

I feel awful when we can't give him treats like we do for our other 2 cats, but he just brings it up in 5 minutes.

Any tips??

Use the food kibble as treats. Just don't give him a whole bunch so he ends up overweight.

We use food kibble as treats for our herpes kitty since she can't have anything with grains and most common treats contain some kind of grain. She doesn't know the difference and acts like we've just given her the moon!

EVO has just put out a line of dry, crunchy grain-free treats called Wild Tastings. My guys like them quite well... Herring and salmon and Turkey and Chicken.

Of course they PREFER Whiskas Temptations, but I am trying to limit grains in their diet b/c one of my boys has a cranky GI tract. The vet thinks it might be caused by grain. We shall see.

If your cat vomits up the treats, don't give them to him.

As the others have said, using regular good quality dry kibble as treats is better anyway. If he isn't "fooled" b using his regular food as treats get a different brand or flavor of high quality food for treats.

Maybe you could just slow cook a boneless chicken breast? I shred it into small pieces and put them in ziplock bags and bring it out of the freezer a little at a time and use that for treats.

I do this, too. Mainly so I have it available for sick cats though, not for regular treating.

Sometimes I found that dry cat food will tend to expand in the cats gullet, try testing your dry cat food by putting it into some water and see how much it grows, if its over 30% this could be part of the problem.

Also, check the cats teeth for any gum or inflamation or a bad tooth.
Check his mouth and be sure is tongue and gums are pink, if they are yellow tinged kitty may have a kidney or bladder problem and a good blood workup could be a huge benefit at getting to the root problem.

Finally, when my cats went through this they were eating dry food without chewing and breaking it down enough, you might have to break it into smaller pieces.

If kitty is puking canned cat food, check ingredients and switch and try different brands that use real ingredients and not "Meat Byproducts".

Just trial and error.

Only a small percent of dry foods DO NOT at LEAST double there size in water... the water test was debunked many years ago as it does NOT mimic the digestive process of a cat... You will find that meat by product is actually well defined if you look it up in the PROPER book
... meat meal or meat by product meal I have far MORE issues with as the definition is much broader

To the op

I am another who uses a different flavor or brand of dry for treats ... I found trial size bags to work well for this and be actually very cost effective..
