I have seen it mentioned in another thread about adding fish oil to a cats diet for their coats. Now, there isn't anything wrong with my cats' coats, like they are nice and soft and shiny, but I would like to try it out. Are there any health benefits to doing this?

And, I am super super paranoid about Monster winding up wit UTI issues and crystals in his urine. He drinks a good amount of water, I always catch him drinking from the dogs water. I also saw mentioned in a thread about adding water to the wet food, which I have been doing, because Monster loves the gravy, he is loving me adding water to make more gravy! But I heard that fish in a males diet isn't good when it comes to UTI problems. So I really don't feed them food with fish in it, once and a while I will get them a can of fishy food. Could adding fish oil to their food cause Monster to start having UTI problems? Or, is fish just bad for cats who have already had UTI or crystals?

BTW, I try to watch him in the box as well, so I can pick up any problems early.

BE Careful as to WHAT oil you use if you have UTI issues... I use Nordic naturals , one found at costco and a sardine oil made by natures logic...

Fish oils SHOULD NOT have anything but fats( ie Omega fatty acids) but due to processing they often have either pollutents or proteins found in them...

Healthy coats = healthy amount of fatty acids from the diet already..

Hard to find but a OMEGA 3 only fatty acid will aid in decreasing inflamation

We give our girls fish oil for the past several months. It's revitalized our older cat! She is so playful now and mischievous, it's unbelievable! Her coat has gone from coarse and brittle to soft and supple. She also seems to be more alert and has more energy.

We use the gel capsules from Sam's. Just nick one open (I use scissors) and squeeze out the contents onto their wet food. Mix it in and you're good to go.

Our vet prescribed it for Kasey.

When I brought her home, her fur was not good due to poor diet and the environment where she lived (she is the tortie in the "My Cats" secton at the top of my post, her story is there).

She has responded well to the fish oil (and good diet and environment). Her coat colors are much more distinct, the fur shines and I have to comb her every other day because it grows thick.

Our vet recommended Welactin for Cats when I asked about fish oil supplements. She originally had recommended it for my older guy with health issues, but he didn't like it. Stimpy gets the Welactin every morning because he likes it.
His coat is very nice.

We were able to get a sample of Welactin before buying a bottle, so that is something you could ask your vet about.

My older cat who's had practically a total transformation since we've added fish oil into her diet has kidney problems. We've had no problems with her kidneys or UTIs since starting the fish oil. As a matter of fact, many on the Yahoo CRF group give it to their CRF kitties to help with overall health.
