I need to do some good cleaning in the basement. The sewer overflowed and got krap on the cement floor. I need to clean and sanitize it, but I am at a loss of what cleaners to use. I've always used Dawn dishsoap for most things I needed to clean.

I had some Spic n span that was pet safe (so the bottle said) but I used it sparingly with a lot of windows open, and kept chasing NyghtShade to the part of the house I wasn't cleaning. Now that I need to buy more, what would you suggest??

I'm really freaked when it comes to chemicles and cats.

Thank you for any suggestions you have

IA. If you need me, just meow..
I use the Method cleaners and just keep the cats away until the area is dry.
Method is supposed to be animal and child friendly, but still, you never know with sensitive cats...

I would just keep the cat from the area and bleach the heck out of everything.

That's so nasty, I'm sorry that happened to you.

Thanks, it's been... interesting.

This house has one door inside the house, that's on the bathroom. So it isn't exactly easy to keep her away. It's a pretty small place with a basement. She's got food and water on both floors, potty box upstairs (I will get a second one for the basement when I can). I've never been in a place this small with no doors like this. It's made for a couple with no kids or roomates, lol.

I just don't care too much for the idea of locking her in a little bathroom. Believe me... that thought has crossed my mind MANY MANY times. The house has great airflow though. Open the basement windows and cold air just pours in and pushes all the warm air upstairs!!

Thank you
I will try that.

After it's all clean and thoroughly dry, you might apply a layer of KILZ sealer to really make sure. I understand it creates a good barrier against moisture, and that's what I'd be worried about: any future moisture that might someday "revive" the contamination down inside the concrete.

Ask an expert first, though -- I'm only going by what I've seen on This Old House.

Actually, properly soaking the concrete with Nok Out should help kill any bacteria... but yes, once sure it's completely dry, I do think sealing it is a good idea.

I ordered the nok-out
Thank you for suggesting that. I was thinking about the kilz paint. That is a great idea
It smells much better down there. I got the krap cleaned up, and used water just to get as much up as I could. I also tried some bakinsoda stuff, thought it couldn't hurt too much. Wow... It did help some.

Shade had me carry her across the wet portion of the floor, it was cute. She stayed away while I was cleaning, she didn't care for the sound of the brush on the cement. When I went upstairs, I had to carry her across the wet part again, so she could get up the stairs... she's cute. It's all dry now, but I need to disinfect.

Thank you

Aw, isn't that cute? My Pearl usually requests an airlift out of the kitchen after eating, because Sassy likes to stand in the doorway and trap her in there.
So Pearl hops up on the counter, puts a paw on my arm, looks me in the eye, and goes "Mrrowr!"

We live to serve.
