Last night my husband had to work late b/c he is in the process of moving his shop from one location to another (he is a machinist and owns his own company). I have a really hard time sleeping without him, so I was still up at around 2:30am getting ready for bed. I got out of the shower and she kept meowing and pawing at me, and I couldn't figure out why. I tried letting her out of the room but as soon as I opened the door her tail poofed up and she refused to go out. I figured she was just being weird, so I shut the door again and went to get in bed. I had just layed down in bed and had Nora get in bed with me, when she must have heard my husband walk in the house from the garage b/c she stood bolt upright, put herself between me and the door, and almost stood on point like a dog does, and stared at the door. She stood that way for about a minute before my husband finally opened the bedroom door, but he must have scared her b/c as soon as he did her tailed poofed again and the hair on her back raised up.

My sweet Nora was trying to protect me from the intruder that was in our house! She makes quite the good guard cat.
She heard my husband long before I did.

So cute! Yes, I've always said cats are better watch "dogs".
My abyssinian is very protective as well. Anytime a doorbell rings (whether mine or on TV), she jumps up and starts growling. She does the same thing if she hears my dog out back barking at something. I pretty much live alone and if I ever get scared because I think I hear something, I just look at the cats. If they're relaxed, then I know I have nothing to worry about. Unfortunately, this has the opposite effect when they're wide-eyed staring at the door and I have no idea why. Spooky!

I have two "guard-cats", both of them growl at dogs barking or passing by one of my picture windows and Spencer growls at people at the door.

The first time Heather growled at a passing dog, I was totally floored. I had no idea a cat could be or would be so forward and brave. I was typing on my computer (huh, go figure, I was on TCS at the time!!!
) and heard her, looked over and there she was, sitting on one of the cat tree perches, as tense as a cat can get, staring and growling out the window. The topping on the incident? She was growling at a maltese puppy that probably weighed less than she did!

Yeah, there's nothing that raises the hair on the back of my neck quite like thinking I hear something and looking over to find five cats on point, eyes gosh-awful big and hackles raised, bodies tensed for flight, all staring hard in the same direction. It gets me in the gut every time - I have to mentally talk myself down before I go check the door.

All my cats guard well are their beds!

Actually, I've learned to watch Hannah as she's very good at hearing weird noises and things like that (bugs).

We have a "guard cat", with tortitude

Kasey is loves human attention and is very friendly when people visit.

She is an indoor cat, now and doesn't show much interest in going outside but seems to want to defent the house.

Some examples;

1.) Last winter, one night, some people put a car in the ditch on the country road that runs beside our lot. We called a tow truck for them.

Kasey sat at the patio door and watched like them a Rotweiler until the tow truck pulled them out. She would not be distracted by anything that normally gets her attention in the house until they were gone.

2.) One night this summer, we had the windowa open. letting the fresh air come in through the screens since it was a cool night.

The one window is low and something must have come to it in the wee hours of the morning.

I hear Kasey make "noises not of this world" and hit the screen. When I came to investigate, there was nothing there, she had "run it off".

When I was up getting breakfast, she went back to the window, just to check.

3.) I was off work on a vacation day on Nov. 20/09.

That day, the work crew was finishing their last day of a new water main installation on our road (thankfully!!!).

In the morning, I was sitting in my recliner chair taking in the news on the TV.

Kasey jumped up on my lap and was going to settle down when she spotted the activity outside. We are in the country with a reasonably large lot, so this was well over 100 feet away.

She reacted BUT, it was not like a scared small, feline.

She sat bolt upright, ears forward on alert, glaring at them and sitting agressively; her whole demeanour was; maybe I had better “run them off”.

I pet her and asked her to settle down, which she did.

Our other two cats don't show this kind of behaviour, I am not sure it is is in her nature or from her earlier life

This is exactly what Nora did, but she didn't calm down. Even when she saw it was just "dad" she didn't calm down until he came over and pet her. lol
