Hi everyone!
I joined this forum mostly to help my mom with her cat (previously mine, when I lived at home). Myself, I have two dachshunds but, sadly, no cats.
I had two cats and a dog when I lived with my parents before moving away from college, after living away from home for a few months I started developing an allergy to the cats. I stuck it out for the sake of my 16 yr old (at the time) cat and brought her to live with me. My dad had always said no pets when I would ask for one, when I was about 4-5 he told me I was going to the mall with him. When we got there he took me into the pet store and had me pick out dishes and a litter box, I was confused but did as he asked. When we got to the counter the lady asked which kitten we wanted. I remember looking at him and saying "Are we getting a kitten?". I picked out a beautiful calico kitten and named her Frisco, after one of my friend's cats that had recently passed away. I later (much later!) found out that my parents had been talking about it for awhile and that they had seen an ad in the paper for this pet store opening, if you bought a starter kit you got a free kitten, so they decided that the timing was right and let me get her.
For a long time it was just Frisco and I, she was always a plump cat but pretty active. She was very standoffish and mean in general, but in her later years she became more loving and would actually purr and let you pet her. When Frisco was about 3 I started bugging my parents for a dog. Eventually they gave in and I went with my mother to look at puppies on a farm, we paid $25 and got the best dog in the world, Tipper, a collie/shepherd mix. I still compare my dogs to him all the time and will never own another collie or shepherd because I would compare them too much. Two years later, when I was in grade 5, my friend's cat had kittens. I would go over to her house all the time and play with them. A little grey one would always fall asleep on me and come to me whenever I was there. I begged my parents to let me have her, they kept saying no. When I graduated from grade 5 about 2 months later my parents had a surprise for me... the little grey kitten! She had been named Lois by my friend's family and the name just stuck. She turned out to be more evil than she had been when I had been visiting her and would always attack me, bite my face, scare me, etc but she was also very loving when she wanted to be. The first few weeks she was home she and Tipper bonded very well, he would let her try to nurse off of him and she would sit with him for hours. We always told people that Lois was Tipper's cat. As the pets got older they started getting sick. Tipper was diagnosed with kidney disease when he was 8 years old, Frisco was diagnosed with diabetes when she was around 10-12 and Lois was diagnosed with a heart murmur around age 5. Tipper and Frisco both passed (with our help) from their disease within 6 months of each other nearly 3 years ago. Tipper went into kidney failure and Frisco had a massive stroke and then went into a diabetic coma that we couldn't revive her from. They were both humanely euthanized while my mom and I held them and petted them.
My mom now lives with Lois and my father. Lois has had a complete personality change since the other pets have left, she is very affectionate now and will socialize more with the family. She even plays with my dogs (dachshunds) when I go to visit!
So that's all about my pets, I suppose I should go on about myself now... I'm 23 and live in London, Ontario with Sadie, a 3 year old black and tan mini dachshund, and Fynn, a 1.5 year old chocolate and tan brindle standard dachshund. We love to go out hunting (small game) and tracking. I am a freelance photographer and absolutely love my job! In my spare time I like to go see bands at small pubs and absolutely love music! I'm lucky that with my job I can travel a lot and bring my pets with me, so we take advantage of that as much as we can. A few years ago I had the pleasure of attending the East Coast Music Awards as a press photographer with one of my friends, it was an amazing experience and where I met my current beau (we actually met a few months before but this was our first time actually hanging out without a ton of other people).
I hope to learn as much as I can to help my mom with Lois!
