Kitty has a litter box phobia!

Hey, all!

I'm new to the forums and utterly desperate. Lestat, my 6-year-old cat, has over the years developed a phobia of the litter box. He began to stop using it, holding in his stool until it practically burst out of him while he ran panicked through the house, dropping pieces everywhere. During these times, we would lock Lestat in the bathroom with his own litter box (away from the other 2 cats). He would use the bathroom and be fine for a few months, but then it would happen again.

Now, however, Lestat will not use the litter box on his own. We have to confine him with the box every day for 30 minutes to an hour, and sometimes he doesn't even go then.

We're pretty sure something frightened him while he was using the litter box when he was young. Perhaps one of the other cats attacked him. Either way, we've taken him to the vet and ruled out any medical issue. His phobia seems isolated to an open litter box rather than actual defacation or urination. Lestat is in general a HIGHLY anxious and easily-frightened cat.

I'm posting this to ask if there is any way to solve this problem, or will we have to confine Lestat in the bathroom every day? I know from research that alot of people have had this problem, but I haven't seen any cases to this magnitude. We're at our wit's end! If anyone has any tips, please let me know!

Thank you,

Dia

Aw, poor baby! And wonderful you for not losing your mind over this - it's hard.

Have you already tried different litter boxes in different locations? You say he's scared of an open litter box - have you tried large covered litter boxes in an open location? Our kitties loved the Booda Dome with steps. Cat Attract litter?

To help calm him down since he stresses so easily, have you already tried Feliway? It was designed for cats who pee outside the box, but it is often effective as a de-stresser. Have you tried flower essences? Bach's Rescue Remedy? It can be added to water, and dabbed behind kitty's ears, at the base of the tail, and a good dollop under the chin (so it wafts up into his nose). It doesn't always work, but when it does, it's quite effective. http://www.bachflower.com/Pets.htm

Wow - searching for an extra large litter box, I just found this link - it's a good read! http://www.wvcats.com/litterboxsolutions.htm

OK.... all of that aside, it seems to me you need to help him associate a litter pan with good things. What about getting him a new huge covered litter box, and not putting litter in it, but feeding him treats in there with no other cats around. Then feed him (and all the other cats) treats - him in the box, the others not in the box. When you're sure he's not scared of the box, put Cat Attract litter in it, and put it in the bathroom with him. ????????????

If he seems to use it without a problem, put it somewhere... so other cats can't bother him without him seeing them coming.

And if you're going to try Cat Attract litter, it will probably attract all the cats, which could be a problem. Maybe also purchase the cat attract additive to add to the other litter boxes (because using it for a number of litter boxes can get expensive) so they all don't necessarily flock to the one. In fact.. I'd add one or two more boxes, at least temporarily, because all of our kitties are attracted to new boxes , and you want him to feel safe with at least one of them.

Oh - I don't know the best place to buy the Cat Attract litter - you can look up where near you to purchase it here: http://www.preciouscat.com/

And this is a really good price for the additive: http://www.entirelypets.com/catattract.html (You add it to your existing litter).

Thank you so much for your suggestions! I'm going to try them right away.

The only thing I'm worried about is that Lestat refuses to use his litter box if one of the other cats happens to use it. I'm hoping if we associate a litter box with good things, he'll be okay with sharing it.

...hopefully.

Yeah, that's the problem - there's no real way to "assign" boxes.

Hopefully getting him to associate the box with good things, and getting him comfortable with one litterbox... then putting it in a safe location with easy come-and-go access where he can't be ambushed... and Feliway and Bach's flower essences to help him relax a bit... I hope it works!

Please keep us posted - others may come along with more ideas!
