Hey, all!
I'm new to the forums and utterly desperate. Lestat, my 6-year-old cat, has over the years developed a phobia of the litter box. He began to stop using it, holding in his stool until it practically burst out of him while he ran panicked through the house, dropping pieces everywhere. During these times, we would lock Lestat in the bathroom with his own litter box (away from the other 2 cats). He would use the bathroom and be fine for a few months, but then it would happen again.
Now, however, Lestat will not use the litter box on his own. We have to confine him with the box every day for 30 minutes to an hour, and sometimes he doesn't even go then.
We're pretty sure something frightened him while he was using the litter box when he was young. Perhaps one of the other cats attacked him. Either way, we've taken him to the vet and ruled out any medical issue. His phobia seems isolated to an open litter box rather than actual defacation or urination. Lestat is in general a HIGHLY anxious and easily-frightened cat.
I'm posting this to ask if there is any way to solve this problem, or will we have to confine Lestat in the bathroom every day? I know from research that alot of people have had this problem, but I haven't seen any cases to this magnitude. We're at our wit's end! If anyone has any tips, please let me know!
Thank you,
Dia

And wonderful you for not losing your mind over this - it's hard.

Cat Attract litter?
, and you want him to feel safe with at least one of them.
