I feed my cat 1/3 cup of dry food twice a day. but due to this terrible weather I have not been to the store to get more food, so until monday when I can buy more food I have only enough for 7 feedings but I need 8. so I will be 1 feeding short. can I mix an egg in with the food?

i don't know about the egg, but with that many feedings you could easily cut each back a little and make the 8th couldn't you?

A plain (no salt/pepper) COOKED scrambled egg will be fine for your cat to eat. Ours eat eggs all the time if we have leftovers - the cats and the dog get a little bit (we sometimes will mix in bacon bits for flavor).

I feed raw and will feed raw egg yolks but prefer to cook the egg white. However too much eggs can cause diarrhea, mine do fine with an egg once a week and I haven't tried more.

Mine eat raw and cooked eggs sometimes, but in this situation I would just do as fastnoc suggested and cut each meal down a little.

If you have any meat, you could feed that either raw or cooked - no bones if you cook it. Or many cats like poached chicken. Meat is a better meal than egg.

I agree with just skimping on each serving to make one more. Don't mix an egg in with some of his food, because if he doens't like it, then that is one meal wasted.

I also like the idea of feeding him some scrambled egg, if he'll eat it, as a little snack between the two of the smaller meals. Let us know how he likes them!

(PS Tolly and Jennie both like to lick the bowl after I make egg salad, hard boiled egg and mayonnaise)

Well I'm already cutting back by giving him 1/3 cup. Up until a week ago I was feeding 3/4 cup a day but he was getting a little overweight, but he is a BIG eater and loves to eat. So with 1/3 cup 2 times a day he is complaining a lot. The problem is I feed him Blue Buffalo and the only pet store that has it is 30 miles away. I think I will go to walmart and just get can for him but I am afraid after eating can food he might not eat the Blue Buffalo. Or I do have some turkey, beef & chicken thin sliced meat. Would that make him more wild? I don't want to screw him up by changing food. Thats my worry. Sugestions?

Canned is MUCH better than dry. So if he wants to eat canned vs dry feed him that

Walmart has Newman's Own Organics and Natural Life which are both good wets. At least the one here has both of those brands. I do avoid the ones with fish/seafood and the ones with veggies listed in the title.

I think all Walmarts have fancy feast. Here is a list of the better flavors:

http://www.felinediabetes.com/glutenfree.htm
The following are Fancy Feast flavors contain NO wheat gluten and are below 10% carbs:

Tender Beef Feast (brown label color)
Tender Beef & Liver Feast (magenta)
Tender Beef & Chicken Feast (red)
Gourmet Chicken Feast (dark pink...be careful, this looks just like another chicken variety with gluten!)
Turkey & Giblets Feast (olive green)
Tender Liver & Chicken Feast (orange)
Chopped Grill Feast (kelly green)
Flaked Fish & Shrimp Feast (true blue)
Savory Salmon Feast (orange)
Flaked Ocean Fish Feast (pink)
Tuna and Oceanfish Feast in Aspic (teal label)
*Remember that it is a good idea to limit serving fish to just a few times a week.
What Blue Buffalo type are you feeding? Foods tend to overexagerate the amount a cat needs of it....you really need to figure out how many calories the cat needs and how many calories are in the food.

Sliced meat won't make him wild - food can't do that. But lunch meat is not good for them, usually too much sodium.

Agree with above, wet food is much better than dry (though I think raw is best, but not do-able for everyone). Also, cats on wet food often loose weight better than those on dry.

If you can add 1-2 meals of wet to his diet.

Canned food would be best. Don't get him used to people foods or he might not eat his cat food anymore. And all cats should have at least some canned food in their diets anyway (they need the moisture).

This actually happened to me this week, too---I ran out of dry food completely, and no way to get out of town (or even out of my driveway!). Fortunately I had a good supply of canned food on hand. Do you know how many cans 17 cats eat every day?!?!? (Answer: about 25 5.5 oz cans, good thing I had some 13.2 oz cans as well). Yikes. I think my can opening hand is permanently cramped now, LOL. I definitely learned my lesson and will always have spare dry food available from now on.

Rustyboy - do you have any uncooked chicken that you can boil up for him? Don't add anything to the water. Cool off. Pull off the bones and break into little pieces... pour a little of the cooking water on it...he will eat that... and no.. you won't be ruining him. If you have white rice, you can add a little of that, too.

This is actually a recipe for a cat that is sick with tummy issues... but won't hurt Cody.

If you end up feeding your kitty some real meat, don't cook it, just cut it into little bits and let him eat it plain.

Raw meat is awesomely nutritious for a cat, but cooking it (or even microwaving it), destroys all those wonderful nutrients that make it so healthy.

raw , cooked egg or meat up to 10% is perfectly fine routinely ( discuss raw with a QUALIFIED vet or animal nutritionist) ... boiled chicken makes a great opps meal once in a while... I have been known to make my own wet food in a pinch

It is fine to feed your cat eggs. On the debate of canned vs. dry food, good points were made for both sides.... however keep in mind that dry food helps to scrape plaque off your kitty's teeth, which, as we all should know, can cause cavities and/or gingivitis. If you like the idea of feeding canned food, maybe opt for 1 dry meal and 1 wet meal each day. :)

meowza, it's a timeless topic, but the member who posted the question hasn't been on the site for over a year.

I just wanted to pop in and say welcome to TCS! :wavey:

...and address your comment about dry food. It's a myth that dry food has dental benefits. The kibbles simply shatter if a cat crunches on them (and many cats don't chew). To be of any benefit, dry food has to be specially formulated for dental health. I believe there are seven dental products on the market. As to the dry vs canned debate, this is a very helpful site, written by a vet: http://www.catinfo.org
