I am making greens, blackeyed peas and cornbread, though I am not from the South. I like whole prosperity for the next year and good luck thing, and the deeper message of being poor, looking forward, not back, a lot of tradition and symbolism, and I do love good symbolism and tradition, even if I have to borrow it.

Its also just out and out delish! I may not be Southern, but I can cook like I am.
Except for the cornbread, that , *gasp* is going to be from a box mix. I know, I know, but I don't have a cast iron skillet to make proper Southern cornbread, nor the "staple" pantry items to make it, and I lugged enough groceries home in the cold today!

That's so lovely!

No.... we never did have much of a New Year's tradition.

Growing up, we had a New Year's snacks tradition... my dad has diabetes, so we never had sweets or snacks around the house (made birthdays REALLY special
)... so New Year's eve was always a treat, because we got potato chips and dip and cheetoes while we waited to watch the ball drop in Times Square on TV.

Sis usually makes Haluschka (spelling may be off), a dish my BIL remembered from his childhood. It's a ground beef and rice mixture wrapped in cabbage leaves and simmered in tomato sauce.

I love hot corn bread with melted butter.

My mother would make the traditional greens, blackeye peas and cornbread. I hate everything but the cornbread. She would tell my brothers and I that for every blackeye pea we ate we would earn a dollar that year.

Around here, it's sauerkraut. Usually pork and sauerkraut. It's an old German, PA Dutch thing, I guess. Although this year, I'm doing the sauerkraut with brats and beer in the crockpot tomorrow. We're having friends in for dinner and to spend time together.

I love cornbread. I have my grandmother's very old cast-iron skillet and I always make cornbread in that. Did you ever try cornbread made with maple syrup? Heavenly!

Thats what my Mom makes, too and for the same reason. I love black eyed peas and am making some now, so I have enough to eat for tomorrow.

We also like to have black-eyed peas, greens, and cornbread.

It seems to be a tradition that has spread well beyond the South - last year the store was sold out of dried black-eyed peas right before the new year. Fortunately, I ended up finding a couple of cans, but this year I bought those peas early!

Oh sweetie, it's a crime to use box cornbread stuff around here
Remind me and I'll send you my buttermilk cornbread recipe sometime!

I don't eat black-eyed peas on New Years, even though everyone else here does! I just hate the taste of them!
Sometimes I just swallow a small spoonful really fast and hope for good luck
