Cat Afraid of me after Overnight Vet Visit

Hello - I had to take my 1 year old boy kitty (Artemis) to the emergency room this weekend because he was repeatedly vomiting and was getting dehydrated. They kept him overnight and ran an IV and Barium through his system to see if there was any blockages. We were able to go pick him up the following morning thank goodness. My husband was not there when I dropped him off, only when we picked him up. He now seems to be eating fine and keeping food in his system.

However, ever since he has been acting very differently. On the ride home in the cage he completely freaked out which he has never done before. He's always loved his cage and sits in the car quietly just looking around. But the biggest change I've seen is that he is now terrified of me. He won't let me touch him, he actively runs from me and he's been hiding more. He's fine around my husband, doesn't mind being petted or picked up by him. But since our return he's definitely been more of a scaredy cat which he never was before. He's not as lovey and he won't sit in the same room with me whereas before even if he didn't want petted he always had to be in the same room. He's also not been as playful and isn't associating with our other cat as much whom he usually adores.

I'm just not sure if there is something I can do to make him feel more at home or if this will pass in time. Any thoughts are welcome.

Thanks in advance!

If he is fine with your husband I would give him time to warm back up to you. Treats don't hurt either! Speak softly and give him eye blink "kisses". Don't force his attention by touching him or seeking him out. Let him come to you. Unless you have treats, than I would try calling him or going to where he is and giving them to him.

I'd do the same thing - don't chase him, don't try to pick him up, but have some treats near you, and maybe just sit in a quiet room and read out loud to him. I suspect he'll forgive you soon - but poor little guy was probably even more scared than you were, and might still be a little worried about going back to the 'evil place'.
