No. Valium is not made from Valerian. I know the words sound similar and both have a calming effect. But the drug is a chemical compound. The root is a natural herb,.

Hi Kittygal. :wavey: Welcome to TCS. We'd love to have you introduce yourself and your kitties in the New Cats on the Block forum.

Just wanted to point out that this thread is over 2 years old, and it's likely that many of those who posted befoe will not see your response.

I second the TCS welcome. Do you have cats? I'm sure lots of members would love for you to introduce yourself and your cats in the New Cats section. We always love meeting new cat people!

It's interesting you chose to post in this article, and with the information you did. May I ask what brought you to TCS?

In fact, a few cats do react to peppermint. Mine for example likes to drink peppermint tea. It makes cats calm :)

My cat did have a reaction to peppermint oil i use, so its not just the wrapper the one womans cat liked. And our other cat just went nuts over my bottle of valerian root capsules. ill have to try that one as long as its safe for them. ;)

Funny this thread being revived today. I've just ordered my cats a valerian/catnip toy. Also one stuffed with honeysuckle. They are such catnip snobs because they grow their own, I thought I'd try something new for them.

Well i must say the 4 cats that where around LOVED the valerian root. I just opened one of my capsules and rubbed a tiny bit on their cat toys and tree, and they went nuts. more so than with the catnip. (which grows in our yard and i dry for them) They love the catnip too but this they just had to have.
The nice thing is they are all sleeping now. good toy before bed lol

The Valerian toy bombed here, and I can't say I'm sorry, the smell is...to me..disgusting. If anyone would like to give it a try for free, I've posted an ad in the classified section, The Market Place I mean.

Jennie likes the honeysuckle toy, though.

I have one cat who not only is not affected by catnip, but she is also offended by it. Like if you put a catnip toy near her she will make a disgusted face and run away. She loves toys but hates catnip or any toys with catnip.
I had a honeysuckle filled cat toy once, the cats didn't care for it. I haven't tried valerian though.

Hi,  I'm not sure what your name is besides your forum name, so I can't look you up in my list of customers..but I am sorry your kitties didn't like the valerian spiced catnip refillable bag toy.  It does indeed have a distinctive "dirty socks" smell.  The cats who love it, really love it.  Please email me at information at catniptoys.com. (glad to hear the honeysuckle toy was a hit!)

Hi Mimosa's mom ( or dad) ,

I see that your cat had anxiety issues , so does mine . she is very loving , but very aggresive too ( and I do know it is aggression born out of anxiety over every small sound or changein environment). She was most easy going till she was spayed , then a personality change came over her .Sounds trigger her fear I think.

I live in the boonies and have no access to behaviourial therapist ( veen the Vet here is not holistic) . Can you please give me some details of how much valerian root you gave mimosa , is it safe for oral consumption by cats and did you mix it into wet food etc . Did it help her . Any advice will be great .

Hi Vasu and welcome to TCS!

This thread has been revived several times and I don't believe Mimosa has been on in a while.  Perhaps if you start a new thread with your questions we can get some answers from others for you!

Did a google search on Valerian root and cats, and I found this thread!  I was emptying capsules of valerian root, because i need the capsules for my other medicine that tastes nasty........ so as i was emptying the capsules, my cats all started gravitating closer and closer and my white one started acting funny........ kind of like they act with catnip.......... he started giving me love bites on my hand, which he NEVER does........ so I knew something was up............. and sure enough, this thread confirms it!  VERY interesting!

I have a great Valerian FAQ on my site that would give you some additional information :)

My cat's love it sprinkled in their beds, but yes- it stinks like old gym socks.

As for Valium and Valerian root, the chemical structure is similar

and Valium was synthesized by using a similar chemical  pattern, but changed for strength.

Basically they took nature and messed with it til they found something to make money from :)

Hey, new here.

I'll do the introductions soon, but I just had to share this first ^.^

This is how my Pekmez reacts to Valerian root. 3 out of 4 of our cats react to Valerian root. High quality Nepeta is not easy to find where I live, and the herb shops here sell Valerian as Kedi Otu meaning "Cat Weed" in Turkish.

Ive just woken up to my cat playing around with my herbal sleeping tablets. I came here to look for answers and found out that they have Valerian in them. I took it away from him as I didnt want him consuming it but I thought it was really unusual to find out that it has catnip like effects :3

Valerian is one alternative to catnip or honeysuckle. I used to love watching my cats play with toys using my catnip-Valerian blend.
