I was doing some reading in the office and my DH was watching TV in the other room. It started getting dark and I hear this plaintive "Honey, can you do me a favor?" I went in the other room and my poor DH was sitting in the dark. He had two cats on his lap and he wasn't going to disturb them to turn on the light.

We have a code for it. "HON I'm C.O.L, (insert request here)."

They really do rule our house.

It's unfortunate for us if we need something when the three of them are occupying both our laps... Brian and I will sit on the couch and Mama Cat (his cat before we moved in together) sits on his lap, Moo (adopted after I moved in) sits between us, and Peanut (my cat before we moved in together) sits on my lap.

So, it's 3 degrees in Chicago tonight, and I'm watching HGTV and drinking hot chocolate...and on Househunters they had a fellow cat lover - who doesn't sleep in the master bedroom where her clothes live - because that room has a bed with one of the taller mattresses that her kitty can't jump up to. Mom and kitty sleep in another bedroom, with a lower bed. I so wanted to tell her about those steps they sell for cats and dogs that have problems reaching higher areas, but at least the woman resolved the issue for the moment to her kitty's satisfaction.

When I was growing up we had a rule, that if you had a cat in your lap you didn't have to get up...to change the channel, turn it up, get the popcorn, turn on the light, answer the phone, see what Mom wanted....and so on

Sounds like you were well brought up.

Aww!!! Poor guy! DH and I occasionally have to request backup in order to prevent disturbing a kitty or two! Wouldn't have it any other way!

What is it about cats that makes us so reluctant to move them? We all do this... on the couch, on the bed, on the toilet (you know it's true!), where ever - if there's a snoozing cat involved, we are overcome with a huge unwillingness to move, even if it means enduring an incipient cramp. We just squinch our eyes and bear it.

I've even known folks who were hesitant to simply raise their voices for fear of startling a sleeping feline. *gasp*

You know what I think? I think cats have a hidden ability to hypnotize. As they fall asleep, their minds reach out to ours and immobilize us with this nebulous fear of a wakened kitty. It's likely a survival mechanism, you know? Disable the "sleeping surface's" ability to stir, and they are assured of a cozy, warm, restful sleep, with a commensurately fresh and energized start when they are ready to resume their arduous lives of hunting and stalking stray sunbeams and fat lazy flies.

Diabolical cats! That's what they are!!!
