We're getting things organized to send Peaces & Oscar for a vet visit in a couple weeks (still dealing with Christmas stuff & the new baby they can wait another 2 weeks).

However, my landlord/neighbour has come up with a suspected rabies case on one of his cows!! :O. It being the holidays no one is sure how long it's going to take to get the test done.

IF it comes out positive - well I don't know what the rules are about taking the cats off property TO the vet's office but because Peaches & Oscar haven't had their shots yet (we were doing them with the spay/neuter stuff) they would presumably wouldn't be allowed out for a quarantine period.

So... what do we do about Mr. Man? I can certainly keep Peaches IN the house for this period of time (it would be until the spring) but I can't keep her away from males if the male is her own son & in the same house.

Think I can find a vet to do him here?? :O
(I'm thinking tail-gate neuter, I don't know how much that would cost us).

Ugh, I SO hope this is a non-issue and the cow has just slipped & broken something; but apparently the vet can't figure out WTH is going on & moved on to rabies as it's sort of 'next on the list'.

Couldn't you just put them in different rooms? Keep one in a bedroom or bathroom and rotate them to get more space. Better than someone mating their mother.

Totally agree - if it come down it to we'll just have to keep them locked away from each other. Sadly that does mean one of them would have to be locked in a rather small room while the other gets to roam the house. Ugh, and what if she came into heat & either of them sprinted out of the closed room
. Peaches & Oscar already look exactly alike so we think Oscar's daddy is Peaches' brother :S. They'd be some darn cute but STUPID kittens!!

Either way I really need to get Oscar neutered before he figures out he has male-bits & starts spraying.

It's not like we could have had any warning this might happen & gotten it done a few weeks ago. *sigh* It had better all be a false alarm or I really don't know what we're going to do... I'd just rush them into the vet tomorrow & not tell them but that's pretty un-ethical (not that any of our animals have had contact with the cow, but they've had contact with the neighbour's animals & the animals have had contact with the cow... etc.)

She doesn't need to be in season for him to mate her, cats are induced ovulators.

If she starts to call, he may well begin to spray. So might she.

I don't know how old your cats are, but boys start to figure things out at 4-5 months, so they should be kept apart anyway until both are fixed.

why we were planning on having him done in the next week or two...
(literally the next week or two, I have one more family Christmas next weekend to get past & a baby to have in the next two weeks - then cats).

But I CAN NOT take him to the vet right now because of the possible-rabies, he's not allowed off property (neither are our dogs). Which is why I was asking if any one knows about tail-gate surgery. I realized I do know a vet in the area who has done them before but that was specific circumstances and I don't know if they would do it again.

I was starting to think I should just ask my neighbour's vet next time he's out for the cow to drop by & chop off some nuts
. I don't know if there is a real added risk to tail-gate vs. in office neuters.

As long as we got Oscar fixed up we could wait with Peaches until the quarantine is lifted.

There hasn't been a rabies case in our area in about 10 years so it would be really surprising if that is what it was, this is just such a PITA!!!

I think I'm missing something here - have you just called your own vet and ask what might be possible to do? These are sort of special circumstances and I'd think a vet would try to work with a regular client - especially since you probably want to make sure you get the girl done first, if not both at the same time - those little swimmers can hang in there even after the boy is fixed.

I'm sure they'd be able to set up at least a basic surgical theater in your home - at least in these circumstances, don't you think?

Good luck to you - you've got enough stress going on right now!

Darili is right, he's still fertile for up to 2 months after neutering, so still can't be around the female.

Hope you get it all sorted out.

REALLY!?

I didn't think that was even an option!!

What are they just going to do it on my dinning room table? Presumably there is allot of equipment they need :S.

I have to talk to my vet still, yes, but I'm a little busy... (having a baby in a couple hours actually
). I'll have to deal with it as SOON as I get back from the hospital.

First, best wishes for a quick and safe delivery and for a healthy baby - and you!!!

Then, maybe get a family member to call the vet and ask exactly what's possible - you'll never know til you call. But I'm thinking there are vets out there who do housecalls, and they must have to do certain procedures ordinarily done in an office. Your vet may surprise you with what's possible, given the entire situation with rabies and all.

Vets often quarantine animals for rabies (around here anyways). So I'd consider checking with the vet to see if you can still S/N them, with the understanding that they are under rabies quarantine.

There's a vet here who used to do alters in her dining room, on the table.....don't know if I'd eat dinner at her place (LOL), but she does great alters and her prices were the lowest around. She has an office now so her prices have gone up a bit, but she still does a great job. Anyway, no, they don't need a lot of equipment for it. Just some anesthetic, scalpel/spay hook, sutures, and something to hold the cat on its back. So a "tailgate" spay/neuter, or setting up in your house somewhere, would be valid options. But we can only speculate. It all really comes down to what your vet will do. So just give him a call, explain the situation, and see what he suggests.

And, yeah....don't let him mate his mama. I know a cat that was mated by her son, and the kittens from that litter were seriously messed up. Darn cats and their super fertility.
