My DH is a cat whisperer too! They always go up to him and seem comfortable in his presence. Sometimes it makes me jealous.

I agree with Nial in that it's surprising that they don't appeal more to men because of their independant natures. Our culture really feminizes cats (which is a negative thing), and also that it's OK to be unkind to them.

Boy ain't that the truth. My BF is a cat-man. He turned ME into a cat lover. Rather his elderly gentleman cat named Cato did - may he rest in peace.

I've been referred to as the shelter's "cat whisperer." I've had good luck bringing around shy or timid cats.

Yes, me.

I have always liked them from an early age.

I agree and it is unfortunately true about the last part. It is true that some guys revel in being unkind to them. I personally see it as a weakness and character flaw; there is no risk to being cruel to a 10 to 15 pound animal (if they realy wanted to show how tough they are, why not go a few rounds, unarmed, with cougar or leapard?), I also think, if they are like that with an animal just because they can be, they will be likely to be cruel or unethical with people, if they think they can get away with it.

I have worked in the petroleum industry for 30+ plus years (not the most "gentle" of industries), I shoot clay target and ride motorcycles, but I love my cats and don't care about that cultural views.

I am not alone, my one rescue cat, Kasey, taken from one of our company facilities had a few "protectors", men that had worked in our industry for years. They couldn't alway be around and Kasey has an old injury to her rear left leg from some individual (I won't write the term on this forum that I'd like to).

Every Sunday aft. at the gun club, a buddy and I compare weekly notes on our cats, he isn't bothered by the cultural thing, either.

In the animal group I volunteered last year, there was only one male cat lover and he was gay. It is my impression that straight men don't like to be known openly as cat lovers. Blame it on society.

That's the problem. I think I'd even go so far as to say that there is a stigma attached to being a straight male with cats. This has caused me over the last year to deal with some awkward moments. I love my furballs to pieces, and I'm not ashamed to say that - BUT - I feel like whenever I would mention that I have cats to my law school classmates, they would either label me as:

1) Homosexual
or
2) Weird (for having cats - I'm not saying that it's weird to be homosexual)

People are too quick to jump to conclusions about me - and anyone really.

Good point. I also suspect there are a bunch of male cat lovers in the closet. There are also many who are simply not as vocal about it (online or off), but don't hide it. From looking at some demographic information and my own experience, I think most cat oriented Web sites are likely visited primarily by women.

A little voodoo science...

For example, Quantcast show Catster as 67% female, Terrific Cats as 59% female, Cats of Australia as 66% female, and so on. This site shows 68% female. Certainly female majority, but not hugely so (unless you're running for political office).

These numbers are not fully accurate, but taken with other data, they give you a bit of a picture. Sites like Yahoo and Google, for instance, are closer to 50/50. In fact, Google is exactly 50/50.

Sites that you might think are primarily male, reflect that too, but again, not overwhelmingly. Of the ones I checked, 64% male was the highest I saw (ESPN).

Alexa show similar data for these sites. But, the data, even if taken with a grain of catnip, may reflect more on online "social" behavior (as you've alluded to) than on the cat lover (or sports lover) aspect.

I got an email from a guy a while back that said something like "oh great, a guy who likes cats." I was going to respond with something obnoxious but decided that my time was better spent elsewhere.

There is certainly a stereotype out there, though, and some men just refuse to believe (at least outwardly) that cats are anything but feminine (they've never been around a tiger while it eats).

On the other hand, I've seen many a male of the human species express great love for those of the feline kind. I've also talked to and seen some men who are, by most accounts, "macho" and yet openly admit their fondness for furry felid companionship.

Bring up cats on a motorcycle forum, and you'll get the usual razzing, but then, almost always, someone will chime in with how great their cat is, etc. Happened recently on the biggest Kawasaki forum on the net (where, if you looked, you'd find posts from me about my cats). By the way, Quantcast shows that site to be 69% male.

I've told the story on here about going to the vet and finding one of our shelter cats there. I knew him, so I got him out of his cage to pay some attention to him. Two other guys were in, and they crowded around to pet him, etc. One of the ladies at the counter said she wished she could get a picture of 3 men loving on a cat!

Michael Clarke Duncan, who was built like a tank in the movie "The Green Mile"... you know, this guy:

(image is supposedly open to use under GNU license according to Wikipedia and is NOT hosted by me, but rather who I am led to believe took the photo)

He used to work as a bodyguard (and also a stripper) and is a straight male, and I would consider fairly macho..... he has 5 cats.

I've seen guys talk about their cats on shooting sports (gun) forums. I have this mental image of a guy cleaning an AR-15 rifle while looking at his cat saying, "Who iz a fuzzy wuzzy little snookims?"

Well, we DO have the shot on here of Marlon Brando and one of his cats. And they just don't come any more "manly" than Ernest Hemingway.

I took the tour of what was his house (it was not worth the money btw - don't bother paying for the tour if you're ever there). There must be 100 cats on the piece of property his house sits on.

I still vividly remember bringing home a sick kitten I found (likely just calicivirus or herpes due to the symptoms and that she wasn't that sick). He declared it distemper and said he wasn't going to pay for a cat to go to the vet.
I know exactly what he did to the kitten, I won't share it on here. When I found out the next morning I threw a brick at his truck - hit the driver side door when I was actually aiming at the window. I was only 5 and got into serious trouble for that.
my dad has changed, he loves dogs and he tolerates cats, but he does not do anything mean to them. if a feral comes there, he traps it and takes to the human society, so he is better than years before. he does not like cats, but at least he is not mean to them anymore.

i have been a cat lover for many years now. our first cat, prissy, was the cat that made me love cats, she was so loving and good natured. she was a stray that came to our house many years ago and my wife started feeding her and of course she stayed.
she was an inside outstide cat.
anyway, cats are really cool critters!!!!

I have to say that I love nothing more than when a big macho guy comes in the shelter & starts baby talking to the cats. Being in Milwaukee, we have had big macho Harley guys come in looking for cats. It's awsome.

Cats are much more independant and self confident.

One would think that would appeal more to our gender, I know it does for me.
This is funny... because my friends and I had this conversation once about men and cats and dogs.

It was our belief that men who hated cats and craved canine companionship always picked women who were clingy and needy while men who loved felines picked women who were independent and strong willed.

When we started to look at the men in our circle of friends it really did seem to work out that way... the two guys we knew who "hated" cats also dated women who were absolute drama queens and needy. Our friends who were cat lovers had fun, independent girlfriends/wives and also seemed to be in longer term relationships.

My SO used to say he hated cats... I always told him I knew that wasn't true cause he was with me
Today he is the proud pawpy of 7 cats that he just adores.

yeah, i know allot of people think that cats are not good pets like dogs, but they just really don't know nor have not been around cats.
i loved my dog PJ, he was the most loyal dog i ever had, he was smart, loving and only loved me and me alone.
he was a good dog and he lived a long time. after he died i got another dog, Zackery, but he got hit by a car and died only after i had him for about 6 months.
i never got anymore dogs, but we had a cat. she lived a long long time and after she passed away we got a kitten.
she is a turkish van and loves her daddy. that little furball really got to me, i love that cat to pieces. she is always glad to see me and wants daddy to play with her, she will not play for her mommy, just me.
for some reason when we got her (she was about 6 weeks old) she took up with me and only me. she would not have anything to do with my wife until she got older. for several months, she was daddy's girl only.
she loves her mommy too but she had always been more loyal to me.

i don't see how men could not love cats if they give them a chance.

jay leno has cats and he loves them. he always talks about his cat "Chesse" and he has that funny skit "Cop and Kitty".

another sign that a man is a cat lover, i get to take our baby to the vet tomorrow.
i don't mind it at all because as soon as i get Delilha out of the box, all the ladies at the vet's office start bragging on her, how pretty she is and she is so white and fluffy.
then they are always some other cat lovers there and they always say how pretty she is.
she gets bragged on allot at the vet's office so maybe she won't mind going as bad.
but she will still cry all the way over there and back.
when we get back home she will run and hide for awhile, then she will be ok.
