My Dad has cats also but he does not join the cat sites.
There are also alot of male breeders and judges.

Boy ain't that the truth. My BF is a cat-man. He turned ME into a cat lover. Rather his elderly gentleman cat named Cato did - may he rest in peace.Originally Posted by pushylady
My DH is a cat whisperer too! They always go up to him and seem comfortable in his presence. Sometimes it makes me jealous.
I agree with Nial in that it's surprising that they don't appeal more to men because of their independant natures. Our culture really feminizes cats (which is a negative thing), and also that it's OK to be unkind to them.
I agree and it is unfortunately true about the last part. It is true that some guys revel in being unkind to them. I personally see it as a weakness and character flaw; there is no risk to being cruel to a 10 to 15 pound animal (if they realy wanted to show how tough they are, why not go a few rounds, unarmed, with cougar or leapard?), I also think, if they are like that with an animal just because they can be, they will be likely to be cruel or unethical with people, if they think they can get away with it.Originally Posted by pushylady

That's the problem. I think I'd even go so far as to say that there is a stigma attached to being a straight male with cats. This has caused me over the last year to deal with some awkward moments. I love my furballs to pieces, and I'm not ashamed to say that - BUT - I feel like whenever I would mention that I have cats to my law school classmates, they would either label me as:In the animal group I volunteered last year, there was only one male cat lover and he was gay. It is my impression that straight men don't like to be known openly as cat lovers. Blame it on society.
Good point. I also suspect there are a bunch of male cat lovers in the closet. There are also many who are simply not as vocal about it (online or off), but don't hide it. From looking at some demographic information and my own experience, I think most cat oriented Web sites are likely visited primarily by women.Originally Posted by rapunzel47
While men are in the minority on this site, I don't think their numbers here reflect the reality out there in the world. My DH, stepson, and many of our male friends are cat people. But many of them are not "forums people".
Michael Clarke Duncan, who was built like a tank in the movie "The Green Mile"... you know, this guy:Originally Posted by catloversonly

I've seen guys talk about their cats on shooting sports (gun) forums. I have this mental image of a guy cleaning an AR-15 rifle while looking at his cat saying, "Who iz a fuzzy wuzzy little snookims?"Bring up cats on a motorcycle forum
I took the tour of what was his house (it was not worth the money btw - don't bother paying for the tour if you're ever there). There must be 100 cats on the piece of property his house sits on.Originally Posted by mrblanche

my dad has changed, he loves dogs and he tolerates cats, but he does not do anything mean to them. if a feral comes there, he traps it and takes to the human society, so he is better than years before. he does not like cats, but at least he is not mean to them anymore.Originally Posted by strange_wings
I'm sorry you had a dad that did stuff like that, too. Even if you didn't use to love cats it had to make you uncomfortable.
I still vividly remember bringing home a sick kitten I found (likely just calicivirus or herpes due to the symptoms and that she wasn't that sick). He declared it distemper and said he wasn't going to pay for a cat to go to the vet.I know exactly what he did to the kitten, I won't share it on here. When I found out the next morning I threw a brick at his truck - hit the driver side door when I was actually aiming at the window. I was only 5 and got into serious trouble for that.
This is funny... because my friends and I had this conversation once about men and cats and dogs.Originally Posted by Kai Bengals
There are only a handful of guys on here, but I'm one of them. I have to say, I'm actually surprised that cats aren't popular with more men.
Dogs are needy clingy animals that constantly need praise and reassurance. Being pack animals, it's in their nature to crave acceptance.
Cats are much more independant and self confident.
One would think that would appeal more to our gender, I know it does for me.
