Extra dog in my yard...lol

So we finally moved out of the apt. and into a house. We have been here a total of 4 days and I have already started feeding the stray cat in the area and today we have an extra dog that found its way into the yard.
So I woke up this morning I woke up because Comet was barking, but it didn't sound like her bark so I went to make sure she was ok. Well turns out it was not her bark. This puppy, looks like a rot/ blue healer mix, is standing at my back door barking. Comet is just laying in the grass like, yep we have a visitor. So I go out side (the dog has a collar) to see if their are tags on him. Well he has no tags. When I went to look at his tags the poor pup shrank down like I was going to beat him. So now I am concerned for him. I got the leash, put Jaiden in the stroller (this pup is GREAT on the leash) and knocked on my neighbor's doors, but there was no answer. So I brought him back gave him some food and water and now they are in the yard playing.

My problem is we are going out of town on Sat. so I need to find this pup's home pretty quick, this is assuming that he is going to stay in our yard all day. He found his way in so he must know a way out right? I am not sure that I want to take him back to his owners. I mean who puts a collar on a dog, but no tags? And the way he acted when I went to put him and check his tags has me a bit concerned.

So I guess I need advice on what to do with him if he is still here when Eric gets home from work. Taking him to the shelter is the LAST thing I want to do. He is too sweet to end up there.

You can call local vet clinics & shelters to report having found a dog, see if anyone has contacted them. Short of taking him to the shelter, I don't know what to do with him if you can't find an owner.

I took a few pictures of him. I couldn't help it he is really cute. My guess is a rot/healer mix. His face and his legs look very rottweiler, but the shape of his head and his coloring look like a blue healer maybe?

The black one is our pup, such a pretty girl.

Comet is usually very aggressive towards other dogs I can't believe how clam she is with him!

I see the Heeler too. What a great looking dog! I'd ask around the neighborhood who he belongs to. Maybe he got out of his yard. And even if you don't want to take him back to his owners because of him not having tags, I doubt they'll thank you for taking him to the pound. Every so often dogs in the rural area I live in will get loose and the neighbors know to shoo them back home.

No, I am not going to take him to a shelter. It's not the dog's fault he does not have tags. When Eric gets home tonight I am going to put him on the leash and try all the neighbors again. I just want to know how he got in our back yard lol. It is fenced in, but what ever he is cute and he has made my dog's day. If I don't find the owners tonight I'll set up a bed for him in the garage and call around to vets and shelters tomorrow. If he is a neighbor hood dog I am going to offer pay dates. Comet rarely gets along with other dogs and this little guy has stolen my heart already.

he may be one of those dogs that manages to kill their tags! LOL! We find them laying around camp all the time, either the dogs chew on them or they just slip off the hook, or they didnt get put on tightly. It happens. May want to recommend to the owner getting one of these collars:

He is a cutie! I think he may be an Australian cattle dog personally.

I suppose the darker possibility is that he was dumped in your yard and that's why he has no tags but a collar and shows signs of having possibly been abused in the past...I hope not, he seems like a very sweet dog. Then again, just like some cats like to pay others a visit, maybe he's just a friendly little soul who likes to yard hop.

He certainly is a cutie though, and its wonderful that he and Comet get along so well together! Any possibility of keeping him if you can't find his owners, or his owners don't want to be found? ;-)

I think so, too. I see no rottweiler in him - he looks like all of the other Australian cattle dogs around here.

I had one bound up to me months ago. A very sweet dog. I think the breed may be pretty good at getting loose since that wasn't the first one I've seen loose with a collar on. It seems like it's always that breed and border collies.
I hope you can find his home. The fact that he cowered might just be because he didn't know you and that he might be a more submissive type of dog (which could be why Comet tolerates him).

I found his home last night. I was really sad to see him go. If I didn't find his home I would have kept him hands down. He was so sweet! His name is Paco and he is 8 months. He was so funny when we were walking house to house, I could tell from his behavior that we were close to home. When his "people" answered the door he was just like "hi guys I'm back." They were very happy to see him. Playing with him yesterday made me want a puppy He was just too fun!

So I was sad to see him go, but happy that we found his home. Now if he shows up again I know where to take him back to.

That is too funny. Some dogs (and some neighborhoods) are like that. Once my husband and I were visiting his brother, who lives in rural Virginia. We brought our dog with us. Two dogs came to the front door and I swear it was like two little kids asking if ours could come out and play.

He looks purebred Australian Cattle Dog (aka "Blue Heeler"). I'm glad you found his home. Maybe you could get him and Comet together sometimes for playdates?

Thats how it is at my sister in laws. If her dog in in side the neighbor's dogs come "knocking" at the door. (They paw at the door) until someone lets her pup out to play

Thats what I am thinking, we have a big fenced in yard no reason why the little guy can't come over and play. Comet is lonely today she is barking a lot more. I feel bad for her, maybe in the future we will talk about adopting a pup for her. Every pet needs a friend!

glad you found his home! Hope you and his owners can become close friends for your pups!

Glad this story had a happy ending. I agree that Paco looks pure Heeler/ Aussie cattle dog.
I really hope you can arrange play dates for him and Comet!
