I grew up in Denver, and anyone who knows about them knows they have had a fantastic Christmas light display on the Civic Center downtown for many years. It was already an established tradition by 1955. There were rumored to be 1,000,000 lights on the building.

In the 70's, it was cut back due to energy costs, but it's still a big thing.

By the way, some think that outdoor Christmas lights were invented in Denver in 1914.

When I was a little girl, James Brown, The late "Godfather of Soul" lived in Augusta, GA not too far from us. We would always go around to the neighborhoods and look at the lights, and his was always the best. He went all out. He had Santa and all the reindeer, life size on the top of his house, angels all over his trees, a life size Nativity scene, lights galore, just anything Christmas you could imagine. This was all over 40 years ago, and all this stuff had to be custom made then, you could not just buy it like you can now. It was sight to behold.

Sonny Liston lived in Denver, and back in my childhood his house often won the annual prize.

I never saw it, since we didn't have a car to get around in.

At one point in time there was a whole neighborhood that would do up lights and have like a big block party where everyone came to look at their displays! It was very very cool! Has anyone ever seen the videos on youtube of all the light displays people have choreographed to music? Those are pretty awesome too!!
