Hi everyone. I think that my beloved cat, Precious, might be sick for the first time ever (with the exception of an ear mite infection she had when she was a baby) or she is depressed. I can't tell which. It's been a cloudy day and she usually sleeps for the most part on cloudy days but today she has been hiding and sleeping. She wouldn't even come out when I yelled kitty kitty kitty and she always comes out when I yell that for her. She wouldn't come to me calling her name either. I played with her earlier with her laser toy and she enjoyed that. She is still playing and eating and drinking and using the litter box ok. So other than the excessive sleeping and the hiding under my bed and not coming out when I call her, nothing seems to be wrong. What should I do? I am afraid she might be sick or something. Or could it be that she's simply depressed or bored because of it being cloudy outside?

It's possible the weather might just be slowing her down.

Oh ok. What kinds of things should I watch for besides her not using the litter box, not drinking, not eating, and not playing?

Cats are excellent at hiding illness.

Watch the litter box for odd deposits. Make sure she's eating and drinking fairly normally. And I mean actually eating and drinking; I've seen cats that would put their nose down in the water or food, but not eat or drink.

Others can tell you more signs to watch for.

Well, I did a quick check of her body and it appears that she might have a little discharge from her left eye. There was just a tiny bit of dried up brown stuff at the corner of her left eye.

Also, I tried to check for ear mites but to no avail. She kept getting away from me even when I wrapped a thick towel around her and her legs. I did manage to get a little brown stuff (presumably dirt) out of her right ear. But it was so slight and there wasn't any build up of it.

She is now angry at me and I feel badly for making her go through that so I gave her some Cat-Man-Doo flakes to calm her down. I'll probably play with her too to help get rid of some of those pent up negative feelings she may have towards me right now.

Also, I will watch for odd deposits in the litter box and make sure that she is eating and drinking. She's still playing and grooming herself like normal.

IMO whenever you notice a change in your cat, trust your instincts. If you are posting asking for advice, then I would make a vet appointment. No one knows your animal like you.

Then you can have peace of mind if everything is ok and treatment if not. Hope all is well with your kitty.
