This is interesting:

http://pewforum.org/docs/?DocID=490

It gives a pretty thorough study of what Americans believe. In some cases, it's broken down by religion. In others, by political leaning.

Fewer Republicans report contacting the dead, believing in ghosts, etc.

The study is pretty long, but it reports some interesting findings. Of course, like all good research, it doesn't explain WHY the beliefs are different. But it does seem to show that being a Democrat doesn't make you immune to junk science or crackpot beliefs. And although fewer Republicans reported those same beliefs, they DID report the same beliefs (just in fewer numbers), showing that being Republican is no protection, either.
