I am socializing an adult semi-feral - approximately 3 years. She's probably slightly over-weight but vet said it wasn't an issue and she did not need a diet at this point.

I was feeding her junky dry food when she was outside and am now transitioning her to a better brand. I picked up Wellness Complete Health. Is this the best from that family of foods for her? I also saw there was the Indoor variety and the Core and it gets a bit confusing.

Let me know if you think Wellness Complete Health (blue bag) is ok for a kitty like her. She's eating it and not having any issues so far with the transition (it's about a 50/50 mix right now).

(In addition to her dry, she gets wet food in the evening - but she is VERY finicky and it's quite a challenge to find something she likes!!! I'm giving her different brands, different meats, different textures and she is just very picky! This may be nerves on her end from still adjusting to indoor life, but I'm working on it.)

If there's a reason to choose Indoor or Core over the Complete Health, that'd be great to know.
I was on their website but it's hard to choose the right thing when they all sound good.

I choose Complete Health because it mentioned UTIs and thought that would be good to prevent... but I don't know, am open for feedback if it would be wise to switch. Or if it's fine as, that is great!

In case this helps -
When our 8mo kitten is old enough, I'd like to be feeding them both the same thing. So if this would also be good for a young adult boy cat, that'd be great.

I will say it is NOT a Uti Certified food ....

Core is grain free which depending on your thoughts may = better.... IMHO It is a toss up in a dry food

you can feed the kitten to an older cat... check the AFFCO seal on the back of the bag ... it should say growth and maintence

How can we tell if a cat food is UTI certified?
What organization certifies that a food is OK for a UTI cat?
Do they have a web site that you can share with us so that we can research this info for ourselves?
Thanks

the FDA does it ... there is a SPECIFIC wording on the FRONT of the package...

certified equals that the FDA tested the food for 18-24 MONTHS beyond the AFFCO six month trial ... It is basically IMHO an isurence policy if you have a UTI prone kitty...

As for a link...lol.. you know who you are asking
_

I will search for the wording though

Maybe you could give us a couple of examples of certified food...
then we can look at their bags when we are at the pet supply store.
This is important info. that could be very useful when deciding on a food.

Right now Pro Plan Urinary and One urinary tract health ...

Both packages say

Helps Maintain Urinary Tract Health by Reducing Urinary pH
http://www.purinaone.com/Products/Pr...8-274567B0ECE5

you will note many other formulas like the wellness say has cranberries or low magnesium( which can aid in uti health) or formulated for uti health or ph balanced

they cant strait out say HELPS MAINTAIN Urinary health...the Certified ones can since they have the test results to back up the claim ... I am off to see if this = out on the RX foods

Okay small hitch in the old system here ... Just talked to Nutros nutritionist ... They used to claim on the bag the same as Purina ... slight formula change sent it back to the FDA for testing ... It passed BUT Nutro WILL NOT put the claim on the bag as too many folks were NOT consulting their VETS and using the OTC in place of a RX.. It is not meant for crystals , stones or continuous UTI issues... It is designed for the Maintence to prevent such from happening or to prevent further issues in MILD situations ... IE if you have had issues TALK to the VET and take in website info as needed ...

Nutro Max adult and lite are certified like the Purina s ...

I guess all of us should if we are looking at a food CALL the company

There is just no simple answer is there Jen...
but thanks for trying.

Regarding this members main question...
When I transfered Dex off of Nutro's new formula we switched to Wellness Indoor Health.
I do have some concerns with this formula that he loves...
he is nine years old but no history of UTIs.
Indoor Health....
The Phosphorus 0.78%
Magnesium 0.094%
I am not good at math....
do you feel that am I risking his urinary tract health with this formula?
http://www.wellnesspetfood.com/cat_w...or_health.html
It is so confusing yet so important to get it right.
thanks for your feedback

I chose it just as a maintenance thing, a "bonus", not treatment. The vet didn't say she had a problem - I just thought it was a good thing.. like a human taking cranberry pills or what not.

Thanks for all the research - that is awesome!

You asked an important question....
I am the same way....
no UTI issue, just want to avoid future UTI issues if possible.
