Hi all, well its been a tough few weeks, John (my hubby) nanna passec away on 29th november, the viewing was last wednesday and funeral on thursday, out of the whole family I haven't coped very well. I suffer from anxiety and depresssion although not been on medication for a long time I was prescribed diazepam last week after suffering a panic attack. I have only used this a couple of times since the pasing and have done ok I think. I found last week that I have a swollen gland in my neck and have been quite ill-sore throat, cough, no energy, sore neck/shoulder, just generally run down.
I have been more worried obviously because of nana passing. I rung up docs on friday and he sent me straight for a blood test, he said no worrie djust checking for viruses. Well I have been worried although my gland has gone down a bit, I think my neck pain is due to our old bed. Has anyone else suffered with swollen neck glands?? I am a pessimist, hope results are good tomorrow.xx

Not sure where your swollen gland is, but I had one just under and slightly behind my ear which was attached to my parotid gland and was removed. Now I am not saying that is what yours is by any means. You should of course see your doctor.

I am so sorry to hear you've had a death in the family.

Many, many things can cause swollen glands. I'm not a doctor by any means, but I imagine one thing they probably tested for was mono. I am glad you sought medical attention.

I hope you feel better soon. Please keep us posted.

Good luckwith the results.
I'm sure you've just been run down with everything that been going on and caught something.

Wow, I could have written this
the first week of September when my father went into hospice care and my sister was diagnosed with cancer. I developed swollen lymph nodes in my neck and on both sides on the back of my head, too; I had horrible pain from my neck down my shoulders and arms. My hands had that prickly tingly pain like when they are waking up from being "asleep" and I couldn't use them for anything. The pain in my hands was so bad I couldn't even pick up a pencil!

My doctor did tests and identified two viruses in my body but he told me that it can all be traced back to stress. When I saw him 6 weeks later I was much better but I still have the tingly pain in my hands, esp. the left one and this is December!

Stress can do anything to you. Try to rest and don't eat refined sugar, try to take some walks or do some yoga or other nice things for yourself.

It's like in a plane when they tell you if the oxygen mask drops down, put one on yourself first and then help anyone you are traveling with. You have to take care of yourself before you can help others.

Omg, I too have got really painful neck and shoulders, how odd what stress can cause.

Anyway the good news is have just rung the doctors and the results are good, kidney, liver and white blood cells are fine which is great news. I think it is just due to stress and being run down, the doctor said I could possibly have a virus but he won't offer me antibiotics as they don't here for some reason unless its drastic, so I will just have to suffer a bit longer !! Thankyou all once again for your vibes and kind words. xx

That's great news! And no, they won't give you antibiotics for a virus, because they only work against bacteria. However, if the viral infection gets so serious that you're at risk for a secondary infection by opportunistic bacteria, they may go ahead and give antibiotics to prevent that. (That's how I understand it, anyway -- correct me if I'm wrong, nurses!)

Gald that it wasn't anything serious. You just try and take it easy (you know in the rush up to Christmas and all
)

I had a swollen gland with no other visible signs of infection, no fever just a little pain from the swelling on my neck. I had to take antibiotics for it for about a week and it went down.

Did they check you for various herpes viruses? Besides HHV-4(epstein-barr). HHV-5 (cytomegalovirus) acts similar to 4.

I presume so, my doctor said no bad viruses found and also I have had all these checks when I was pregnant with my daughter, kidneys, liver and white blood cells ok. To be honest, our doctors here are rubbish, it is so hard to get an appointment and you have to speak to a doctor before they will give you one so I was pretty lucky to get a blood test ! I am just glad now and hope that when all the stress has died down I will feel 100%. x

Do you ever get copies of your labs or do you just take your doctor's word for it?

As for not finding herpes. Everyone has it - usually type 1, type 3 (chicken pox), and something around 90-95% of people have type 4. 5 is common, too, but some people manage to miss it since that one is typically spread through saliva.
When 4 and 5 (both get called mono) flare up from the immune system getting low, it can cause symptoms like you had. When 3 reactivates in adults it's shingles...

To specifically test for 4 and 5 they can't just look at white blood cells or routine labs. They have to specifically run test for those viruses - they have to use western blot or another test (can't remember the names for the ones that look at igg and igm antibodies) that takes a while to get results from.

I just hope this doesn't happen again. In some people chronic fatigue syndrome can be traced back to hhv4 and 5 flare ups.
