I just saw someone deliver a box of food from the food bank to my downstairs neighbours.

These are the same neighbours that keep us up all the time with their loud music and drinking and partying.

They spend all their money on booze and illegal substances...and then get food from the food bank????!?!?

My mom was a single mom with three kids and two jobs...SHE used the food bank at Christmas time, because she needed to.

These clowns downstairs really tick me off.

People like that really p me off too, they take, take, take and needy people have to go without, these kind people always get what they want, no questions asked. I have my own experiences of this. x

It is sad since there truly are folks out there that need it legitimately. I used to live in a low income district when I was putting my first hubby through university. I would shop for good food that I could make but still save money such as lower priced cuts of meat and just cook them differently to make them tender - that sort of thing. I would see the folks on welfare cash the check at the bank, meet the SO outside, give him money which he instantly crossed the street to the beer store, the mom would go into the food store with 2 kids in the cart to do food shopping. When we got to the checkout together, her cart was filled with potato chips, pop, candy, popcorn and just plain junk that you know would last maybe 48 hours and then they would need the food bank.

IMO, the best thing anyone could do for these folks is to teach them how to shop and cook. I don't buy into the song and dance that there is no time to cook. I cook a from scratch meal most every day unless I have enough left over from the previous day and it doesn't take more time to prepare than some of the junk stuff that comes pre-packaged. Well it does take more time than opening a can but I can have a great meal on the table in 30-40 minutes.

Do those neighbours have children? If so then the kids probably need the food bank but if it's just the couple, I'd be inclined to report them to the food bank that they are spending their money on booze and drugs.

That p's me off too

We have someone who asks the shelter to help her with dog food every month, then asks that one of our volunteers drops it off to her at work because she can't get to the shelter but asks them to load it into her car - we are maybe 15 mins drive from where she works, she could come on her lunch break. Then she called us asking if we had different flavours because her dog didnt like that one

Nope. No children. They are middle aged burnouts.

Having grown up dirt poor, I can appreciate real need.

But a few years ago, ABC News wanted to do a documentary on Hunger in the USA. After just a few weeks of research, they gave up and abandoned the project. They found that short of parental misconduct and neglect, hunger is virtually unkown in the U.S. There are so many programs that, if one needs help, it's there.

I wouldn't do away with the programs, but it is apparent to anyone with eyes that the programs are abused.

I would report them, there are people in dire need of food who probably doesn't get any help. I despise people who take things when they don't deserve it.

It makes me mad, too. My good friend's baby has serious health problems and she is on a three year waiting list in her county to get nursing assistance, etc.

This so frustrates me as well. There are people at work that work full time and get food stamps?! Yet they can afford to order out every day for lunch!? I filed for unemployment for the first time last year, first time any type of government/state assistance, and did everything to work again because I felt ashamed......

I know too many morons like that. Not only to they manipulate the system, but when they have money from welfare or whatever else, they don't even think of trying to help their kids with it. They just go out and buy more booze and drugs. Thankfully none of them live too close to me. I don't have to put up with their stupidity on a daily basis.

I work part time, and can't physically work my job full time. I also go to school to try and improve my situation... I can't get food stamps. I'm in low income housing, work a barely above minimum wage job, and can't get food stamps... and yet I see folks who drive luxury cars use the Oregon Food cards (Oregon doesn't have stamps, they give you a card and deposit your allotment into that account). These are not your stereotypical thug drug dealers, either... they are upper middle class white women... using the system... and I get denied... what the heck? They abuse the system and I'm being honest... I need the help, and they don't... trust me, it's tempting to lie to get into the program sometimes... but I have a hard time with it.

I'm so sorry that you can't get the help that you need, it burns my butt when I see people get things that they don't deserve while others go without.
I remember sitting in my car, not long ago, while my husband went to pick up some meds at the drug store. The food bank is right across the street and I saw this woman drive up in a NEW Ford Expedition and come out of the food bank with a couple boxes of food.
It seems like the people that are trying to better themselves are the ones that get left out, while the scammers work the system. I mean if I had a new rig and couldn't afford food, I'd be selling it and getting something more affordable to make life easier.
I donate to that food bank on a regular basis and more this time of year. I won't stop because I think most people that go there need what they are getting and the scammers are few...I hope!

It is sad to think that the honest people feel cheated by the system because the system is being cheated by dishonest people......

I am less judgemental about that, as we often donate extra pet food to the food bank and they have asked us in the past to drop off boxes of food to people who live near the shelter on our way back, so you could see us bringing food out.

However, way too many people do misuse the system.

I also think the system needs to make more incentives to make people go back to work though, it is easy to pretend you are looking for work. I know someone who was laid off and was on unemployment but hated not working and was looking for work. She took a bit over minimum wage job and was better off on unemployment, where she was getting more and they paid her school fees to educate herself so she could get a better job. She feels like she needs to work - but for those lazier or in need of the extra cash...

Having been a single mom on welfare, I completely understand the vent. And I'll add to it.... the food bank is there for a reason, now I don't know about yours but I know the ones here have a hard time keeping up with the people who need them, and I can remember times where I'd go and they'd apologise because all they had was a couple things to give me.

It is people like your neighbours, who give people who truly need assistance, a bad name
and take away from those who need it

But for her, you never know if she was picking it up for someone else right?

I know what you mean. I grew up on kraft macaroni and ramen noodles because it's all my mother could afford after paying for the two bedroom apartment (to this day I still hate ramen). She even had to work long night hours and often left me home alone at a young age just to make money to put food on the table.

So..what I'm saying is, if you think they are abusing the system OP, perhaps you should give them a call and they will send someone out to re-evaluate this family to see if they should or should not be recieving food from them.

It's just not right at all, I mean it's impossible to tell what is going on with people unless you actually hang out with them, but it's really not hard to tell when someone parties, drinks, and does drugs. If you can't afford food, you probably should quit drinking and stop taking drugs.

UGHGHHHH I hate these kind of people!!

It is the people who milk the system that make it that much harder for those who legetimetly need the help. They continue to find ways to milk the system while others have to bend over backwards just to get some help. And many of those people give up before they get the help. It is sad and ridiculous.
