There really should be a law against them calling on Saturday mornings!

The same # for 3 days has been calling and when I answer it, it's dead silence and then it hangs up.
5 times we've called it back to see who it was and it says "All representatives are busy. Please press 1 to hold or 2 to be placed on our do not call list"

So we opted for #2.
They still call back!

How can I stop them?! \t

They've called 9 times since 7:30 this morning

Have you looked up the number online? Usually you can find a number for their office (for if you want to order telemarketing) and give the higher ups an earful and they will remove you from the database

After it goes into effect it makes it completely illegal for them to call you.

Edit - Oops forgot the link https://www.donotcall.gov/
That's the first thing I did when I got new service. I always register with them

When you get a call with dead air, hold on a couple of seconds. They may have a bad call center routing system which takes awhile to connect when you answer. Find out what type of organization they are. If it is a charity or political call, there is little you can do other than request they remove you from their list. But if not, request to be removed from their list. If they continue, then report them on the do not call site.

Oh okay well good! ^_^ Have you registered a complaint with them yet?

Are you allowed to post the number that is calling you here? Usually when you google a number you can find numerous people who have complained about it and sometimes people who have had success with getting them to stop will divulge information.

We have the same problem at my house. Telemarketers are constantly calling here, several times a day, often the same numbers. They really irritate me, because I get a lot of the ones where I will answer, and they hang up on me. I saw it mentioned that if you give them a while, they will reply. However, I will say "Hello" several times, giving them more than enough time to reply, and then it will click and start beeping. It bothers me more than anything, when they call while I am the only one home/awake, and I will have Mittens or Monster on my lap with no phone near me. That's when I just let the phone ring and the machine will pick it up.

Thanks for the link to the National Do Not Call List. As soon as I saw the link I had my boyfriend's mom go to the site (I am usually on here from my phone, not the computer
). We have asked most of these telemarketers to take us off of their call liest because we aren't interested in whatever they have to say. But, we will get calls from the same places, sometimes the same day or the next day. We registered our number, and will report them if they call us.

maybe say "Y'know what [insert gal's/guy's name, then say 'sweety'
] give me your website so i can read more about your company. ..Personally, I need to be in the mood to listen to someone on the phone and I'm not in the mood right now, so give me your website."

then if they do, report the company to the federal trade commission if the company repeatedly telemarkets to you even after you said you don't wanna be called

If your number is on the list and a telemarketer calls you, you can report them and get some money out of them, or so I've heard...or is it a fine for the marketers?

Ugh, I know eh? We get a call every other day from this message that says "this is an important message from ARO, please call us immediately
Then if I am home and answer it, they tell us to immediately press 9. Ummmmm, no.

I hate them too and yes they always call at the wrong time like when you're just sitting down to dinner. I have signed up for the no call list a couple of years ago and that did stop them. I hardly get any calls lately but I do get the hang up calls so they are still out there hovering over all of us. They should be banned altogether.

Over the river and through the woods...
I had this problem a few months ago when we switches services and had to get a new phone number. Not only with telemarketers but also with collection agencies calling the last known number. The first Saturday I was home after having our phone connected, I got 7 calls from the same collection agency...for Jackie. Now, the first time I was nice and said we just got our phone hooked up a few days ago with this number and no Jackie lives here, she must be the person that had the number last. They said they would take me off the list and notate the account. 20 mins later, another call, different person. Told him the same thing. After 4 or 5 calls (all about 15-20 minutes apart) I was really getting irritated. Finally, the last call, I immediately asked to speak to a supervisor and was argued with before I could actually talk to one. The sup did apologize and put it in the system that the number was no longer valid for that person.....then 20 mins later I got ANOTHER phone call....I hung up on them and called the number back and was immediately connected with a sup.

Long story short...from what was explained to me...is outgoing calls are done by the computer (I'm guessing it's the same for telemarketers). It takes a few hours for the computers to get you number out of the queue if you request to not have them call you. So you may just have to wait them out.

But, if it is a non-profit organization I don't think they fall under the "do not call" law. That may be what you are dealing with. Just give it time to get in their systems that you don't want phonecalls from them. After that day I didn't have a problem.

Good idea, they are still telling me they are trying to collect on my student loan, which would be fine, if I went to school here or had a student loan

I work for a student loan company. If they are telling you that they are collecting for a student loan in a message, than they are breaking the law. The dialer system normally leave a generic message to call about "student records" The bad thing is, when we have a wrong number we call information or contact the credit bureaus. They are notorious for giving us a wrong phone number. When someone calls in, the regular reps will take down the number and submit it. If is a rep in my call center, this are printed up and put on my supervisors desk. I and some of the others in my position will go pick up a stack and pull up the program to search for the number. If the number comes up, we will make the number bad. We cannot remove it since if we call info again, they most likely will give us the wrong number again!
This is just the company I work for, I do not know what the other student loan companies policies for wrong numbers are.

I live in Canada so the laws would most likely be different, but they actually spoke to me but didnt know my full name, the message was 'someone in your household must call this number before 5pm today' or something like that. I finally pressed 9 to speak to them, sat on hold for 25 mins waiting to be told I had a mysterious student loan.

They still call me, despite me having a lawyer send them a letter, the woman was so rude telling me I was lying not to pay my bill when I wasnt even in the country for college and paid back my UK student loan before I ever finished university. I have sent them proof that I had not even visited Canada at the time the loan was supposedly applied for and and the paperwork they were sent (they are a collection agency) has the name blanked out, they are going by my Social Insurance number which I have only had for 4 years, since I came to Canada on a temporary worker visa and had a different one when I came. But they still dont believe me, said to mail them my passport so they can check!

What really irritates me is when you get a recording instead of a live person.
What are you supposed to do then? You can't tell a machine to leave you alone.

NEVER dial 9!!!

This is a scam to get an outside line so they can use it to make long distance calls on your phone. It may not have any effect on your home phone, but it might.
