We're going to our friend's baby's first birthday. This is their first child, and it took them quite a journey to get pregnant and we understand how much their child means to them, and are very happy for them.

I'm just curious about what people normally do to celebrate these occasions. For those of you with children, do you invite all your friends to the party, or just relatives, or just the kid's friends & play date group people.

Do you expect to be invited to your friends' kid's parties?

Do you think it's strange for someone to invite all their friends and relatives to a first birthday party? Would you only invite family?

Just looking for different perspectives here out of curiousity! We were talking about it the other day, and realized this is the first time we've been to a friend's party, obviously we've been to family's parties.

First Birthdays for a first child is quite an occasion! I think it ok to invite all the friends and family! They just want to have you help celebrate a milestone in their child's life.

Hey Wendy! As you know Ava will be turning 1 in 2 months! I don't know where the time went

Anyways, before I had her I always planned on having a huge party for my baby on their first birthday. Now that I have a child I don't think I'll be doing that. Close family and maybe a friend or 2. I find that she can get overstimulated and overtired very quickly and a huge party would be a reciepe for disaster

Anytime I've been invited to a childs 1st birthday, or any childs birthday party for that matter, the childs parents always invited family, friends, friends children.. Everyone. I do expect to be invited to friends childrens parties, and I always am invited.

All lot of people invite all friends and family to a first birthday party. It is a big milestone. We chose just have immediate family and a close neighbour, because my daughter was born 12 weeks premature, overstimulation would cause her too much stress.

From what I can tell, it depends a little bit on the culture or area of the country you are in. When we were living in Wisconsin, they had huge keggers for kids' first birthday parties, and EVERYONE was invited. (really!) Usually we just have family over, and then when they get over, family and the child's friends.

Among my family and friends first birthdays are either not really celebrated or just immediate family. Once the child is 3-4 others with kids are invited or friends the child has, not friends of the adults.

Family and friends are both acceptable for such an occasion

This is more what I've experienced! It's really interesting to hear other people's points of view though. This is really the first time we've been to one outside of the family.

Tracy- seriously, where does the time go?! And they seem to grow and change so much, especially when you only see them every month or so.

First Birthdays are very special in our family. We invite family and friends over for cake and ice cream. The child gets their own cake to destroy all on their own.
