Well...turns out it was a good thing I followed my instincts...Lois has great blood work, lab work was great, etc, etc, etc,...put her on the laxatives, etc, etc, etc,....but I still noticed the mouth "smacking" -- took her in for x-rays today...the vet examined her beforehand...felt her tummy, all felt fine, heart good, lungs good, lab work good..."we'll take urine and x-rays so come back in about an hour because if you're worried about the smacking it's best to be safe"............

Found a mass of what looks like elastic bands in her tummy, poor soul. I KNEW my instincts were correct. Pllease send positive vibes for my Lois - they are going to remove it in the moring via surgery and I'm pretty scared - lost my Hemingway last year on this very day

Please send good vibes our way and thanks for all of your help already....

I hope surgery goes well.

Were they the cloth covered hair ties or were they rubber bands?

They would have to be the cloth covered kind -- they're the only ones I use...thanks for all your good thoughts this morning everybody...we'll be bringing her over in about an hour or so...I'm going to do my very best to stay positive....

All paws crossed for Lois this morning, and hurray for you for listening to your own instincts.

I've been meaning to ask, but there never seems a right time...what do you mean by "smacking"?

xo for Lois.

She would just start smacking her mouth -- fairly wide -- for a few seconds at a time. I did a ton of internet research and most of them talked about nausea being a cause for that kind of smacking -- we did of course check her mouth, teeth, etc first and she got the all clear on that -- so the vet checked her tummy and felt she was just backed up at first so we tried the sub-q fluids and the laxatives -- if that didn't work, we were going to do the x-ray route -- she stopped the smacking during the sub-q fluid days but it came back so I took her in yesterday -- I am so nervous about the surgery

I was curious about what it was exactly that she ate because DH has not been careful with his hair ties... one of the kittens steals and hides them. It's the thicker bands, but I'm still paranoid.

I hope you can update with good news about Lois's surgery later.

I have one cat who is obsessed with those hair elastics...seeks them out to play with them...that and pipe cleaners for whatever reason....I had thought about him finding one when I wasn't around...and eating it....Scary...
I sure hope Lois does well after her surgery...We will be thinking about you

Yes, Lois would seek them out as well! You MUST hide them -- I know sometimes they can pass them, but don't risk it! She is probably in surgery right now so I'm sending my own vibes her way, bless my little girl...she is my heart....I'll post later and let you know!

Prayers for your cat.
My Coco once ate those huge rubber bands and we did not know until she threw all 5 of them up.
I was very lucky.
I was so mad at my husband when it happened.
Now we make sure they are not left out.

Lois is out of surgery and in recovery

They found what looked like a piece of string in there -- my husband didn't have all the detail so we'll see when we go and pick her up later today.

We had to monitor her carefully for the next couple of weeks, bless her. The vet said she biopsyed (sp?) the liver as well because it looked like the liver of a cat on a reduced calorie diet?? Not sure what that means but she didn't seem too alarmed so I'm trying not to be either!

Thanks for all the good vibes - everyone here at tcs has been so wonderful and supportive through all of this!! Hopefully, the "smacking" has reached its end!

I'm so glad things went well and your sweetie is home.
Sending her lots and lots of healing so she doesn't need to put up with the cone of shame for too long. Poor little girl.

Day 3 of "Kitty ICU" here at our house. She is doing very well - sleeps a lot and has gotten VERY spoiled with Mommy and Daddy lifting her on and off the bed, etc. Her belly seems to be healing up nicely but she will probably have to wear her cone for the rest of the week at least. We take it off for food - she is very interested in eating, which is a good thing!! We let her groom her face a bit as well but the minute she shows interest in her belly, back on it goes!

I cannot stress enough to watch those little things that your kitties play with! I will NEVER again leave ANY hair ties around the house -- I thought I was already very religious about it, but apparently there were some I missed!

Thanks again to everybody here who offered comfort and advice -- if I had not trusted my instincts on this, it could have ended very badly. We're not out of the woods yet, but we're closer than we were!!

Wow. Thank goodness you got her in when you did. Any news on her liver? could have been just from reduced eating, with all that lot in her gut?

(You may already know that sudden weight loss can cause the liver to fail.)

Keep us posted on the girlie, and Lois: no more snacking on hair ties!
