Help me diagnose my cat! Abuse or Illness?

I hope cross-posting is allowed, I wasn't sure where to put this. Sorry the images are so big!
Well she's not my cat yet, but good as. I'm officially adopting her on tuesday.
I joined this forum just so I could ask you guys about this, I'm so worried.
This is about a cat that I've been falling in love with over the past couple months at a local shelter.

Anyways, before I describe her symptoms, here is a little write-up I did for the shelter so you have some background info. (I have known her since early October and we've been in love ever since, and I haven't been able to get her to bond to anyone else.)
"Posh is a very sweet little girl that has been here since August. She takes a long time to warm up to people, but please give her a chance and she will give you loads of love and affection!
She uses a scratching post very well- it's the first thing she wants to do when you take her into a get-to-know-you room. She will usually want to just explore and play when you first meet her, but be patient and she will really open up if you spend some time with her.
Posh does not like being kenneled, or confined in your arms, so be sure to give her an escape when she gets uncomfortable. She is much more comfortable just being on your lap or leaning against your chest. Posh's favorite place is on a warm, comfy lap and will rearrange herself a few times before she curls up and dozes off.
Posh loves to play with feathers and toy mice, and can jump super high when you play with her! Sit down and pat your lap, and she'll fluff her tail and come right back for cuddles! She gives excellent kitty kisses.
Posh would do best in a home where she is the only cat, since she does not like other kitties. She will tolerate dogs, and young children. She is generally rather quiet, but has a very sweet voice.
Come spend some time with Posh, she will really blossom in a forever home all her own!"

So now....this is what has happenned....
So ever since thanksgiving, Posh has NOT been the cat she was before. I don't know if it was me leaving for a few days for break or what. Her personality is just GONE. She's nothing but a quivery, scared little creature that refuses to leave my arms. She no longer wants to cuddle on my lap, now she has to be up around my neck, hiding in my hair. It took an hour and a half of just sitting quietly for her to stop quivering and actually nuzzle me.
She's very closed down in her kennel, and does not come forward to greet anyone anymore. Just sits in her litter box trying to hide.

This morning I was checking her out, and noticed a bit of brown buggery stuff that I had seen last week, but assumed was eye-gunk. Only it's been on her lower lip. So I decided to pull it off while I was cleaning her face, and lo and behold, there's half of her canine stuck in her lip, with brown gunky scab on top. We have no idea how it got broken, or lodged in her lip. She now has a small hole (maybe 2mm) that has since stopped bleeding. The area wasn't swollen or warm, or at least not enough to make me think she'd be in enough pain to be shut down and quivery. She didn't flinch when I poked around her jaw.

How crazy is that? I don't know what to think.
If this wasn't such a reputable shelter, I'd suspect abuse.
As soon as I get her home next Wednesday, she's getting a vet appointment.

Illnesses she's been through while at the shelter:
hardcore ear infection that took weeks to kick out- she still shakes her head a lot. She was frontlined for earmites, so we suspect it was some other kind of infection. (they were very angry and inflamed, and she was very cranky about them) She was put in quarantine during this infection.
A cold that lasted maybe two weeks, she was sniffly and had heavy eye discharge, lethargic.

Illnesses going around the shelter right now:
LOTS of eye infections.
colds.

Her before she shut down-

during her cold, but it's still a cute picture.

Thanks for reading through my novel, lol! I'd appreciate any help/suggestions!

I will definitely keep you guys posted. I've been looking for a nice, active cat forum for a while- I hope I've found one here!

I volunteer several times a week at our local humane society, so you'll probably be seeing lots of pictures of sweet kitties!

I hope she feels better.
It looks like she could have the herpes virus.

I'm curious, what makes you think Herpes? Here eyes are not as buggery now as they were in that last picture. (if that's what you are referring to)

It was that picture I was talking about.
Her eyes look like my Meekos do when she has a herpes outbreak.

Wow, she's adorable!!

I would imagine the broken tooth could be quite painful, and that could definitely explain her changed behavior. (Not so much the hole in her lip, but the actual broken tooth, could have exposed nerves). How is her appetite? Does she seem hesitant to eat or drink? What condition are the rest of her teeth in?

I had a dog who broke a tooth, and subsequently would not eat hard food or drink cold water when it happened because it was too painful. The vet recommended anbesol for my dog - but of course, I don't recommend that without talking to a vet first, as I don't know if cats can tolerate that medication. Like you, I doubt that a shelter would be guilty of any abuse - but you say she doesn't handle being in a kennel very well...could she have been gnawing on the cage door or something, trying to get out?

I hope she's back to her normal self and feeling better soon. Please keep us posted!

I will look into Herpes, but I hope that's not the case, since her eyes are mostly clear now. They were only really runny when she had an URI.

I did not look at the rest of her teeth, I will do so tomorrow when I visit. This one was broken at about halfway- is that far enough to expose nerves on a canine? As I said, I couldn't feel any heat, and she wasn't too bothered with me messing with her mouth.

I'm not able to know how much she's eating/drinking- the inmates do all that, and don't pay enough attention to tell me (I asked that day). I do not think her weight has changed enough for me to really notice, but it is possible.

And kudos to both of you for having Sphinxes. Awesome cats, those. I hope to meet one some day.

About the ear. One of our cats was rescued from a neglectful home (never saw the vet, was seldom fed, etc). She had earmites so bad, it was painful to look at. The vet had to clean her ears under anethesia. As a result of the infestation, her ears build up wax more quickly and clog up her ears. The vet said it was her immune system's reaction to the irritation.

We have to take her every three or four months and have them cleaned - usually under anethesia. Poor thing, I can tell when they need cleaning - she starts cocking her head and looking at things very closely. The vet says she gradually looses her hearing, so she's using her eyes to compensate.

Keep a careful watch on her ears, too.

Good for you for adopting her. She's a pretty little kitty.

She's so gorgeous and has the cutest little mitts on her paws! Reminds me of my own little tabby girl.

Any change in behavior, eating habits, and/or litterbox habits is cause for concern. I would suspect something other than you being gone, but that could contribute to her changed behavior. It could be a combination of you being gone and something else. I would at least ask to have her checked over by the vet to rule out any medical problems.

If you haven't seen any other symptoms of herpes, she most likely doesn't have it. You can always have her tested, though. The Idexx Real PCR URD test costs about $75.

The poor baby. she looks so sweet. I am sending vibes that she feels better soon and checks out ok by the vet. Good luck.

Yikes, I will definitely check. Right now, all that happens is that she shakes her head a bit, and they get a little pink.
Good for you for sticking with your girl!

I would think the shelter would have her checked by the vet. They must do that, right? I mean if she has something wouldn't they want to get it treated?

I hope she gets back to her old self. She sure has an in you to care so much for her. She is a sweetie!

Normally she would get checked by a vet, but this shelter lost their vet last year due to the economy. All we have right now is a vet tech.

We have an appointment for later today- I REALLY hope we can get her fixed up for the drive home!

I don't have much to add on the health issues, since I have never had to deal with a sick cat..

However, I really want to tell you you're an ANGEL for caring about her when nobody else does. There really is something to say about many of the people on this site (including you ) who care about the poor kitties who are sick and neglected.. I am sure there is a special place in Heaven for people like you!

She is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I love her already!

Thank you very much. Yes, at the shelter, I am one of the most active "cat cuddlers"- they call me The Cat Whisperer.
I just gravitate towards the ones that need the most help- whether they are sick, depressed, or shut down.

One of the most fulfilling times of my life was two weeks ago- a 4month little orange male had just been put in cat adopt and was still wet from a bath. Terrified, coughing, and shaking. I wrapped him in a towel and we cuddled for two hours till he dried off. He's being evaluated for pneumonia as we speak, but while we were together, he kept looking up with these wonderful, grateful eyes. I'm the only one that he isn't scared of now. It's frustrating when they imprint on you and don't bond to anyone else!

Got back from the vet- gut, heart, and lungs sound great. It appears she has exposed pulp in the canine- so infection is going to breed in there really easily. It will get extracted as soon as my vet back home deems fit. That being said, she probably is in some pain. Vet never offered anything for the pain, so I might ask my vet when I get home where it will be cheaper if she still isn't feeling better. It does not look infected.

Will be using Feliway (yay pheremones!) and some homeopathic organic stuffs for the trip and introduction to the house.

I'm glad to hear little Posh is doing OK! I'm sure there is some pain with that broken tooth.

I want to start volunteering at a shelter but I'm so afraid I'll get so attached to the kitties that it would break my heart that I couldn't take them ALL home. My little girl was only 5 months old when I adopted her, and she'd already been at the shelter for two months!! She was so skittish it took the adoption counselor quite a time to even get her into the carrier for me to take her home. I didn't even get to PET her until I got her home and took her out of the carrier to give her a great big hug. They told me that nobody had adopted her because when people came in looking for kittens they were looking for outgoing playful ones. I don't know what drew me SO much to her, and I'd be lying if I said there wasn't a time or two early on when I wondered just what I'd gotten myself into, but she is the sweetest thing ever. Although she still runs and hides from everybody but ME, she is a super cuddly, affectionate kitty.
