It seems the first of the year they are finally coming to remodel my apt kitchen. This opens some interesting questions for my cat since we have no other place to go. I always refrig the wet food in Tupperware after each quarter feeding, now we will have no refrig for a week. How long can wet food safely stay out before it poses a risk to my cat? I would go through one can in 24 hour period. Was thinking maybe an ice cooler would work. With all the wood and misc pieces floating around I figure I will have to cage him since he likes to swallow anything on the ground too.

Half an hour is probably about all you want to leave the wet food out. What I recommend is to put out part of the can at each feeding and then refrigerate the remainder immediately rather than putting it all out and then refrigerating it. You can get the caps that go on the cans and seal them up for this. I use a brand called the "Kitty-Kap" which fits 3, 5.5, and 13 ounce cans and seals really tightly.

I think a cooler would be probably be fine if you refilled the ice every day. You might need to rig up some type of shelf to keep the food from falling into the water when the ice gets really melted.

Locking the cat away is probably a good idea, especially while the work is going on. There will likely be people going in/out of the house, so escape is a possibility. Some of the work might also open up holes in the wall or floor where your kitty could get stuck, too. Once the work is done for the day, you can assess the situation in the kitchen and decide if it's safe to let kitty out. Either sweep up or ask the workers to sweep up after they're done each day to get all the bad stuff off the floor.
