Christmas visit (long)

My boy (5 yrs old) has been with me for 2 years (shelter adopted), and he's very, very human bonded. He is also a very 'laid back' cat who seems to like new experiences.

When I travel (infrequently), I have a sitter who sleeps in my house, but she's not available for the holidays, so I'm planning to bring him with me to my sister's house for a couple of days for Christmas. This was my sister's request because she hates the fact that I don't stay overnight because of the cat. I'm apprehensive about taking him out of his 'territory,' and I want to list my preparations, so you can advise me if you think I've forgotten anything.

1. When I visited for Thanksgiving, I brought his second litter pan and a box of litter so they can have it set up when we arrive (drive is 90 min. to 2 hrs., depending on traffic). I also brought two Feliway plug-ins to be activated 48 hrs before we arrive. My sister's main living area is 'open plan,' so I think the 2 Feliways will serve the area we'll be in most of the time.

2. I bought a new scratching pad for him (although we have a lot of posts, he likes those corrugated cardboard ones, too.) I plan to introduce it to him HERE a few days before we leave and then pack it for the trip.

3. I bought Rescue Remedy to give him the morning we leave to help with the car ride. I've tested it with him, and he will eat his food when I add it, and it seems to calm him a little (I think). I have the largest size VariKennel, so he should be comfortable.

4. I will pack his food, dishes and bowls, and a jug of water (he drinks from a fountain at home but will drink from a regular bowl, too). But my sister's tap water has a different taste, and I've read that it's best not to offer strange water right away. We'll only be there 2 days, so I'll probably just use my water.

5. In addition to the scratching pad, I'm packing his favorite bed, and the mat he loves to sleep on (on my desk), as well as the toys he gets from Santa on Christmas Eve (if he likes them), and the laser mouse that he loves.

6. He knows my sister and niece (they visit here), and they are the only people who will be with us. No groups or strangers around. We plan to have a very sedate holiday. He doesn't know the house, but he seems to be very adaptable. When I brought him home from the shelter, he explored the entire house immediately and made himself 'at home.'

7. My plan for Christmas morning- He likes to get up and eat at about 3 am. I plan to exercise him then because that's our custom--he will run after the laser mouse for a while. I plan to leave about 7 am, and he's usually ready for more food about then, so that's when I'll give him the Rescue Remedy (about 15 min. before we leave).

Any suggestions? Have I overlooked anything?

Sounds like you got things covered. I would strongly suggest you confine him to your room where you are sleeping for most of the time. Christmas time in a strange place can be overwhelming and you don't want him to accidently get hurt or outside when doors are opening.

Thanks for your response, and I understand your concern. However, I won't confine him because he is never confined, and the reason for bringing him is so that he can be with me all the time, as he usually prefers.

The only reason I considered taking him to my sister's is that 1) her house is small, so that he won't be overwhelmed; 2) the main door to the outside actually opens to a small foyer--i.e., there are two doors involved, and no one will open both doors at the same time. That is, if someone is exiting, they will not open the outside door unless to door to the living room is closed, and they know he's safely inside. I have my relatives trained

If he's not microchipped, make sure he wears a harness and ID tag while he's traveling. In a strange house, you just never know when that door is going to open....

Does he travel well by car? My younger cat Samson is also very laid back and very adaptable, as long as he is with me. Travelling in a car with him is a breeze. He'll just curl up on the seat beside me and sleep

My older cat, Rascal on the other hand, hates travelling by car and will scream the entire time and I am talking ear piercing loud shrieking even for a 15 min. drive ... so depending on how your cat is you may want to consider asking your vet for a *mild* sedative. Nothing to *drug* him or *knock him out* but just to help relax him.

Other than that, if your baby is not already micro-chipped I would recommend you have it done just to be on the safe side.

With my cat Rascal it doesn't matter how big the kennel is, he still wants out as he is claustrophobic. So I would also get a harness and leash for him just in case that you need to stop, you never know what can happen. That way with a harness on if he freaks and decides to make a run for it while you are trying to get out of your car, you can grab hold of him by the harness.

For example, when my husband and I relocated, an eight day trip, Samson, yes my laid back one, decided that on the second day he wanted out. We stopped for a lunch break and I had just got out of the car, the door was still open and he started taking off like like a bolt. If it hadn't been for that harness, I would have lost him. It was the only time that he did that, but still, let me tell you, I was ever so grateful that I had that harness on him! Oh and it does not go around the, neck. Petco and Petsmart will have them.

You may not end up needing it, but better to safe than sorry, just my experience, with cats and cars, you never know what may happen.

I also usually just bring their litter box with me in the car. I put it in an over sized garbage bag in the back seat and never have had a problem with it. Also I put some comfy pillows for the boys to lay on, but that is just me <chuckles> Well, as you can see, I've travelled long and short distance with them a few times so I know what to expect.

Other than that I think you have all the bases covered and you and your baby will be great!! He is blessed to have a cat mommy like you! Have a wonderful time while you are there! Who knows, it may go so well your cat sitter will be out of a job!!

*Hugs*
