I've noticed she sticks her tounge out.

My current Foster, Nera, has this strange habit of sitting with her tounge just barely sticking out of her mouth. I know she has dental issues, she is currently on antibiotics for them. She is the one with eyelid agenisis (she has no upper eyelids). I don't know if this tounge thing is related to her teeth, or maybe just a habit. Just wondering if anyone else has a cat that sits around with it's tougue sticking out a bit?

I asked a similar question some time ago because Ollie does the same thing.

apparently it's common and I was told it's normal.

It could have started in relation to something else but is just a habit now. I have one girl cat that always sticks her tongue out when she sleeps (and makes suckling kitten noises...) and a kitten who always has hers out, too.

As long as you keep an eye on her teeth anyways there's nothing to worry about.

Yeah, Genever leaves her tongue hanging out kind of often too. Usually just a tiny bit too, but sometimes more. It makes me laugh, because she acts like nothing is out of the ordinary! I never thought about it being a problem, the vet has never said there are teeth problems or anything so I just let it go.

I posted some tongue pics of her a while back..

My cat always did that, and I always thought he did it when he was a little p'o'ed. The first time he did it was when he stuck out his tongue at the vet who was inserting his microchip when I first got him. The last time was when he was at the vet hospital for his final illness, he stuck out his tongue at the vet when she told him he couldn't go home yet.

Sometimes Holland seems to forget to put her tongue away after grooming. She'll be cleaning herself and then look at me with her tongue hanging partly out. I tell her she looks like a doofus but really I think it's pretty cute...

Cats will do that if a particular smell really intrigues them. They have very sharp receptors in the roof of their mouths. There is no reason to worry, unless you actually see and HEAR the cat visibly panting. If that happens, then it's pretty sure the cat is in distress. You may want to check out some cat behavioural sites online.

Peaches sticks out her tongue ever so slightly when she is sleeping or very relaxed. My previous cats did too. I always thought it was just the tongue slipping between the big canines. When cats loose one or more of their canines the tongue will slip out and dangle so, I think its just the tongue being soft and pliable enough to peek through. It is soooooo cute!

Streak is a great one for sticking his tongue out. When he feels 'neglected', he will crawl into my lap or on top of something that is good cat petting height, then beg for tummy rubs, and then out comes the tongue. He just lies there, eyes mostly closed, purring as best he can, tongue out a bit then he starts drooling. Brother Tippy will stick his tongue out when he is feeling really content. The rest just drool

I've seen other cats do it on occasion, but Nera seems to just sit there with the tip of her tounge sticking out. Not a whole lot, just enough to see the tip of it. It is actually very cute. She is a great cat, but I know she would never be happy at my house with all the other cats.
