Oreo is 8 years old. The last time he ate his wet food was 2 nights ago. He ate a little of his dry food yesterday. Today, he ate the dry cat treats I gave him, and he's been drinking water normally.

He's shown a few behavior changes:
1. He sleeps on my bed, which he normally doesn't do.
2. He stays indoors alot, he normally spends the day outside (he has a pet door)
3. He started using the litter box 3 days ago, he normally does his business outside
4. He's been sleeping a lot. All day.

But he still acts normal in other ways: he still grooms himself, he still drinks water. His tail flicks. He follows me to the bathroom (why cats do this, I have no idea).

I'm worried that he isn't eating his wet food and that he sleeps alot and started using the litterbox. I haven't changed his diet.

Any ideas?

Thanks and Aloha,
Scott

I took Oreo to the vet yesterday.

The vet said that Oreo seems to be a normal healthy cat.

His temperature is in the normal range, maybe just 0.5 degree on the low side but still very normal.

He has no breathing problems
He has no heart rate problems
He has no wounds or absesses
He has no oral wounds, just a little sore in the back of his mouth but the vet said that's not preventing him from eating, since he eats his dry food snacks.

He did eat most of his wet food meal when he came home from the vet
He ate the remainder of his wet food meal last night
He only ate the gravy and his dry food snacks this morning

I asked the vet if we need to do some bloodwork or tests. He said he doesn't think we need to do that now, but if Oreo doesn't improve in a few days, to come back in and we'll do bloodwork. I'm giving it until Monday. If he's not normal by Monday, we're going in for blood tests.

This morning isn't any different than yesterday. He doesn't eat much of anything and is lethargic. But he wanted to go outside, so I let him out and he's outside now.

I don't know what else to do. My friend's cat was also about the same age as Oreo (9 years old) and died within a matter of days, exhibiting the same symptoms -- not eating, lethargy -- after being very lively and active just days before.

I feel like I'm doing what I can, not sure what else to do.

I would seek a second opinion...
I am not one to be comfortable with "watch for a few days and come back" when the cat is already like this for some days, and not getting better - if anything, getting worse...
If you are not comfortable with the answer from your vet, which sounds like you are not, by all means follow your instincts and either take him back and insist on further testing (if you REALLY trust your vet), or take him to a second opinion...
I would not wait...

I agree with Carolina, get a second opinion! None of us is perfect, including our vets, and we can usually tell when there's something wrong with our kitties.

We had a mutt dog named Oreo when I was a kid, she was the smartest, sweetest dog I've ever known. I hope YOUR Oreo is OK!!

People who are close to their animals develop a 6th sense. You seem to have it. You know something is not right.

I ditto the other posters...get blood work done.

I hope Oreo gets back to normal real soon.
