This happened last month. This is from when I took Fuzzy in for an emergency appointment and about two days before he died. I just wanted to get opinions on what happened between me and the doctor so I can decide whether I want to take my cats to him again.

So here's what happened:

I had to take Fuzzy in to see the "other vet", Dr. J, as he was the only one working and it was an emergency appointment. I prefer Dr. C and had never seen Dr. J before. At this point we weren't sure what was wrong since we were waiting for the results of the blood work. All we knew was that Fuzzy was not feeling well, was dehydrated, and hadn't eaten or used the litterbox in more than 20 hrs.

Here is what I said to Dr. J:

Should I continue giving Fuzzy his medication (Prednisolone)? He's supposed to get it every other day and his last dose was Thursday which means he would get it tonight (Saturday). He seemed perfectly normal until he started taking this medication.

So that's what I said to this doctor. He did not understand it and asked me several times to go over it. I asked him if I was confusing him and he said yes. I asked that because I wasn't sure if it was me or the situation that was confusing to him. I think I understand why he might have been confused, but I'm not sure. Is what I said confusing? What does it mean to you? If this doctor is confused by what I said, then it makes me question his intelligence.

If both of these vet work in the same office, Dr. J should have had access to all of Fuzzy's medical records, even though this was an emergency visit. Which means that Dr. J should have known exactly why Dr. C put Fuzzy on Prednisolone, what dosage he was getting, and how often. He should not have been confused by anything you asked, if he had read Fuzzys chart. Even if there was a language barrier (I don't know if either of you speak English as a second language) the back chart should have been read by him to help familiarize himself with the patient. If he hadn't at least looked at Fuzzys chart, I not only wouldn't go back to him, I would also make sure to report him to the Better Business Bureau and the state licensing agency governing veterinarians.

Please accept my condolences on your loss of Fuzzy.

The doctor and I both speak English as a first language. Based on something this doctor said to me I'm wondering if he took something I said a different way. I'm thinking that maybe when I said, "he seemed perfectly normal until he started taking this medication," the doctor took that to mean the act of giving the cat the medicine. As in, opening the cat's mouth and dropping the pill inside.

I've actually been wondering if this doctor screwed up a little. I felt that he should have done x-rays. I believe that Dr. C and Dr. T both would have done x-rays based on the history of urinary/kidney stones. His reasonings for not doing them didn't make sense. I believe that if he had done them, it would have made a difference. I'm not sure how much of a difference, whether it would've been a life or death difference. But it would have made a difference.

One of things that makes me question this doctor even more is an experience my grandma had with him. She took one of her cats to him for a checkup. For some reason she had her young grandson with her at the time. I think he was probably three or four at the time. Grandma said that the doctor paid more attention to her grandson than to her cat. Her grandson (my cousin) has a speech problem so he was way behind with his speech/talking but he's very social. Grandma was upset with the doctor because she felt he didn't give the cat a thorough exam. I don't even think this doctor likes cats. He certainly doesn't act like he likes them.
