I've been a bit ill since last Sat night (the Sat after thanksgiving). Started with a dry cough, had aches, low grade fever, dizzy.....
Been taking mucinex the last four days, before that the cough syrup with the same ingredients.
Been much better since sunday, not as much coughing but I've had these coughing attacks/spells like today for instance.
I feel that I needed to cough (not a "productive" cough") and off I went.
I ran to the bathroom as my gag reflex kicked in and I vomited small amounts several times (there went lunch). My eyes were watering and I drank down some room temp water (about 16 oz over the course of several minutes).
Did not have problems breathing at all.
Been sucking on throat lozenges and gum to keep moisture in my mouth as my throat seems to go dry then I start coughing. About 3 hours later while at the bank I started coughing again but no where near as bad. In between this time I did take another mucinex.

I'm ok now in fact I should be due for another mucinex tablet but would like to hold off until bed time if possible.

No runny nose/head congestion just this dry nagging cough. No I do not smoke!

When I'm sick like that, I make up the following concoction and drink it slowly.

In one mug of water (coffee mug), add:
1 T lemon juice (fresh if possible)
1 T honey
1 T apple cider vinegar

Heat in microwave until warm. Sip slowly.

It really does help soothe the throat and keep coughing to a minimum. If you can find them, try horehound cough drops. I usually get them from the health food store.

That happens to me nearly every time I get a virus (or around smoke/scented stuff) - some viruses don't don't cause me nasal congestion, either. Instead it's all inflammation.

For me it starts like your's, progresses to my lungs - lots of inflammation that sets off the coughing, then the coughing makes my throat raw which makes me cough more. Just treating the throat never works, though, because my airways are still inflamed.

I have coughed until I passed out before. That was not a fun experience.
Another time I coughed so much that I had that funky buzzing in my extremities that one gets when their oxygen levels aren't good. (I was already on meds, going to the ER wouldn't have done much).
When I get these fits nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, stops them once I start. All I can do it prevent them and fit through the ones I get - which you've been doing as best as you can.

Along with the mucinex try drinking plenty of water and take anti-inflammatories if you can (naproxen, ibuprofen, asprin) to try to calm down the inflammation that's part of the problem.

Of course a doctor visit is a good idea, too.

Another thing that could help a little is a humidifier if you don't have one - if you do, you could add another so that the whole house is cover or another small one if the bedroom if you don't have one there.

with my schedule squeezing into the doc's office isn't a good chance-perhaps I'll go to a quick care doc if this persists.

I've been taking but not consistently ibuprofen for my neck and the muscles are really tight from hunching over and coughing.

Can you take aleve? I know some people can't... I prefer to use that for my back, neck, and other things because it's less pills and naproxen has some muscle relaxing properties.

Besides being careful outside (cold air) and seeing a doc, I don't know what else to tell you.
You'll have to fight the virus off and hope it doesn't turn into an infection. I hope you get to feeling better soon.

Not to be alarmist...but pertussis (whooping cough) is fairly common among adults. Not sure of the symptoms, but it's something you should be aware of.

My allergies get to the point where I have a hacking non-productive cough to the point I swear I'm choking. I have found that nasal washes (like with a neti pot) twice a day help with the Mucinex.

Elderberry concentrate is supposed to help with respiratory problems. I make my husband take it when his cough gets too bad.
