Hi, my husband arrived home last friday with a tiny little 6 week old kitten. I have recently lost my other beloved kitten and although i told him repeatedly i was not ready for another one(it was still too soon after Jesse), he thought, bless him, that this little one would help me. My question is that she does not purr when i love her and stroke her. When do they start to purr? Does this mean she will be an unaffectionate cat?Jesse purred from the moment i got her.

sorry if this is a silly question, just wondering

Tash

I think she's still in the stage of getting to know you

Some cats need time to figure things out in their brain

I'll bet she'll be a purring machine once she gets warmed up to you. Best of luck with the new arrival!

Hi there! 6 weeks... so young
poor baby.... Why so young? He should be with mommy for another month or 6 weeks... There is precious learning to be made at that age - 6 weeks is way too young to come away from mommy - 10 to 12 weeks is the proper age.... What happened?

Cats are individuals, with purrs that range from from a silent vibration to an idling Mack truck.

Hi Carolinalima, the mother was apparently not wanting the kittens to suckle anymore, was pushing them away, i think by the sounds of things her nipples were infected. Thats what my husband told me, he got her from a friend from work. I too think its way to young, but she is doing well.Eating loads and using the litter tray. She is going to the vet next friday for her vaccinations, cant do it before 8 weeks.

Thanks mrblanche, i think she will be the little sewing machine type! xx

A few cats never really get into the purring thing. Aya's not a purr-er. I've had her since 4 weeks old and she's never really purred much. She's not that into petting either. And I tried to give her lots of handling when she was smaller.

If she's in the mood, she might purr for 5 minutes a day. That's the only time she wants to be loved, then she goes on about her business like nothing happened...

So, Troant, has the purring started?

I have a little foster that would purr your socks off!

I wouldn't worry too much about getting your baby at such a young age. Growing up we continually got kittens at that age. They were fine. Kippy came to us the day he turned 6 weeks old, and was our love bug for over 20 years.

You can also purr to her while you're loving on her so she gets the hang of it. I do that to my adult cats occasionally when they're laying by me and I get the biggest purrs back!

Hi, Thanks Lyrajean, Stephanietx and Threecatowner. Susie is doing really well, so playful and cute. Mrblanche.... STILL NO PURRS!! She sits on my lap everynight and i pet away but nope, no purrs, not even a slight teeny weeny vibration! Stephanietx, just tried purring to her and she looked at me like i was completly bomkers and plus i sounded more like a drone of bees than a purr!! ha ha!!!

i must accept the fact that she will be a silent kitty! but at least she is loving!

xx

She may surprise you. When she is just the right level of sleepy, and the right level of warm and full of kitty food, you may hear the Mack truck!

I adopted my older cat, Callie, when she wandered onto our back porch. It took her 2 years to purr out loud for me! It started off as a very gentle quiet purr when I'd brush her, then one night she just up and purred LOUDLY! Now she won't stop.

I hope your excitement didn't teach her not to do it again!

But seriously, often these little breakthroughs are completely unpredictable.
