Beta does not mean it's okay if it's crap!!

Anyone else really tired of companies using the "BETA" tag as an excuse to put out software/websites that are not up to snuff?

I have NOTHING against opening true beta testing up to the public - I know in some cases that is really beneficial for some companies. But at some point it's time to cut the umbilical cord and go out into the big scary world of the internet all on your own.

Get the stuff together & figure out bugs BEFORE you post them for public access.

GEEZE!!!

(end - random rant of the day... ).

It all depends on how they present the product and if it's free use at your own risk.

All of the stuff I use it technically "beta" even if it's stable versions - there's still bugs that aren't apparent until someone breaks something.

And of course anything microsoft is always beta -though they won't admit when they're releasing something early and it's full of holes

Okay that made me feel better

Microsoft really does NOT have an excuse - they have more then enough resources to do proper testing before launching things.

I really think google is also at the point where there should be more extensive testing before they release things.

FB games are driving me nuts though!!

there was once an internet article mentioning an analogy for microsoft in general.

i can't remember the exact wording but it was something like:

imagine important machinery but it's built with safety pins and elmer's glue and other really really cheap and extremely unstable stuff. ........that's microsoft

Well, from a technical point of view, sometimes with beta software the end users testing it submit feedback for changes. When those changes are made, it opens up the case for bugs to creep in. The more you change something, the more there is risk of something not working properly. It's just how it is.

Even in full production (non-beta), you run into those issues. DH and I play World of Warcraft. We know that on major patch days (like yesterday) maintenance is typically 10+ hours. Yesterday, even after the realms were considered up, many MANY people could not log in or fully load the game. It wasn't until about 8 pm EST (13 hours, I believe) that everyone was able to get into the game.

But that wasn't the end. Because they introduced a new dungeon, there were bugs all night with the instances (DH was literally stuck in the game, in an instance, and had to force-quit the game).

So, you see, it's not just beta software that has bugs or issues; it's really anything that undergoes changes that are at risk for bugs.

^ I'm still listening to DH complain about his UI still being messed up. I like major patch days or anytime several servers are down, it means I don't have to physically pry him away from his computer.

Other things that cause bugs. People not having their OS properly set up. Running conflicting software. Odd hardware, or failing hardware. Or just breaking things. All software is perfect until you add the user into the picture.
