We just moved into my boyfriends apartment about a month ago. He has a dog, and damien has never expierenced a dog before. Zeus(the dog) hasn't done anything to harm the cat, he really hasn't even chased it. He just wants to make friends. Aside from that he was doing really well the first two weeks, then he discovered a way into the drop ceiling. Now he barely comes down from there, and when he does he gets all crazy. Meowing constantly, like he is in pain or really, really scared. He's afraid of me when he comes down, Like he doesnt even know who i am. I keep on trying to barracade the way up to the ceiling, but everything i do seems to fail. I guess my question is, Why does he get so insane when he comes down from the ceiling? some one please help me

I don't know why he comes down of his own volition and then makes a fuss. Hopefully someone here will be much more insightful than I am.

I'd say don't keep his food or water or litter up there (if it's possible) so that he has to come down for the necessities. Also, talk to him pleasantly when he's in the ceiling, so that he stays familiar with your voice. Maybe right now he gets really disoriented when he comes down, since technically it's still a new, strange place.

Your kitty is traumatized by all the changes in his life. Cats do not adjust well especially with a dog in the mix too.

I would give him a place to "hide" that is not in the ceiling. Maybe his own room for now.

Is he using his box and eating and drinking normally? Living in the ceiling is certainly not healthy for him. Stress can lead to other health issues.

He needs comforting and time to adjust to this. IMO it is too big a change too fast.

Totally agree that your cat is VERY stressed by the change, poor thing. I agree that you should give him his own little "safe" space where he doesn't have to interact with the dog. It is VERY difficult to introduce a cat into a "dog household" -- usually a little easier doing the reverse -- he doesn't feel like he has a "territory" -- it's very important to them -- you'll have to create one for him or I don't think he'll adapt very easily.... Sending positive vibes your way!

when we moved into a new house several years ago, our cat was really stressed out.
she would hide and not come out for hours at a time.
finally she got used to it, but then we moved again (because of my job) within 2 years but she really adjusted well to the next move, did not seem to bother her at all.
the first time we moved, we had lived there for about7 years before we moved and she had always lived there in our old house, i guess the stress of moving the first time really got to her, but as i stated, the next time we moved, she was fine.

Good Lord, your cat is supremely stressed!! Not only is kitty in a completely new environment, but there's a dog there as well. If a cat has never been exposed to a dog, the cat will be mortified of the dog, that's just natural. It's too bad you didn't consider this all before you decided to move in. You owe it to your cat to give him a happy, peaceful environment, he's counting on you as his owner to provide that for him. Sheesh.

Can you at least isolate your cat in a safe room for a while? A room with his litterbox, fresh water, food, cat bed, safe toys?

I feel incredibly sorry for your cat.
