Kitten 8-9 weeks, outside, 41F, ok?

Hello,

I'm wondering if it's ok to bring my kitten outside in a harness for five minutes when it's 41F outside.

For that young? I wouldn't do it till at least closer to 12 weeks. Younger kittens have more trouble keeping themselves warm than older ones do.

The three kittens I took in back in October would have been left outside the entire night in weather that cold (plus it rained). They were 7 weeks and I knew if I didn't take them they probably would have been dead or close to it by morning.

Now if you're taking kitty out inside your coat or jacket so you can keep it warm, it would be perfectly fine.

Thank you for your reply Strange Wings, much appriciated. I will take her out under my coat then. She is very curious about the life outside the door.

She may change her mind when she realizes it's COLD out there.

Years ago I let one of mine out on a harness to see the snow... he did not approve. He hissed at the snow and wanted right back inside.

Actually I must say that I'm shocked it's currently colder where I live. 32F/0C

26 (F) here and snowing still.

As for kitten, I wouldn't encourage outside interest, now is a good time to get her accustomed to being an inside cat.

(unless you intend to always use a harness and leash and take her out under close supervision)

Not at that age! Kittens cannot regulate their body temps very well the first few months. They can get chilled quickly. And I would not be taking them outside at that age anyway - not even on a harness/leash.

I would agree with the above ...

Agreed with GK. The regulation of body temperature is a big issue, as well as her having her vaccinations. I don't know where you live, but her there are wild animals in our front yard during the night, animals known to carry diseases and I wouldn't feel comfortable with an itty bitty kitty out there without the full set of vaccinations even if it weren't that cold.
