OK, here's the background----my cousins (3 of them) have all lived with my grandma at some point or another. One recently moved out, and her cat stayed with my grandma. The other cousin (still living there) brought in a new kitten around the same time. So naturally the cat was a bit stressed, and was acting a little weird. She was pooping in the bathtub and was a bit lethargic. Last Sunday we had a family dinner at my grandma's house and I checked her out.

She's not anemic (capillary response time is good) and not dehydrated. She didn't have a fever. Her tummy is distended (looks like she's pregnant---but she was spayed at 14 weeks) and feels kind of odd. Sort of lumpy, but not hard lumps. I gave her some Strongid that I had on hand, just in case it's worms (she goes outside). My aunt thinks she has tapeworms. For the last month or so she's just been lying around, when normally she's a very active cat. She doesn't seem to be in pain. She threw up some foamy yellow liquid on Tuesday so my grandma took her to the vet on Wednesday. He said it was "allergies" and gave her a Depo-Medrol injection and a round of Baytril. So far no improvement.

Personally I don't like this vet at all and, even though I didn't go to vet school, I can pretty well tell you this cat didn't need any steroids or antibiotics
. I plan to take her to my vet when I get a free afternoon (I'm working overtime this week and next). But of course it's always better when you can suggest something to the vet so he knows what to look for.

So, any ideas? Think it's tapeworm like my aunt said? She wasn't vaccinated for FeLV, and there are a lot of stray cats in the area, but without a fever I don't really suspect FeLV.

Both cats need full examinations and testing, fecal, blood, physicals......It is essential for them to have all vaccinations, and follow up vaccines especially when they are indoor/outdoor.

Both cats? Oh, you mean the kitten? He's been neutered, vaccinated and de-wormed....probably time for his last set of shots. I suppose I'll take him in when I take her.

There are cats all over the place at my grandma's; she can't turn them away. So taking all the cats to the vet would be a problem, especially since half of them are semi-feral and won't let us touch them. All the females have been spayed, but there are still a couple toms we can't catch (she can pet them, nobody else can, and even she can't pick them up or put them in a carrier. And they're wise to the trap). They all seem quite healthy except for this one. So it is kind of an unregulated situation, which doesn't help. And my grandma feeds them all kinds of scraps (try telling an 89-year-old that cats can't have scraps!), plus whatever cheap dry and canned food is on sale that week. So it could be a bad case of indigestion, although a month seems long for that.

I'm told that FeLV isn't common in the area. One rescuer has told me that of the hundreds of cats she's had tested, only 2 have come up FeLV positive. I do think that cats allowed outside should get the FeLV vaccine, and I will do that once this kitty is healthy enough to get the shot. But it's probably not a huge risk, especially since she doesn't fight with the other cats.

Oh, yeah, I should say, she's eating fine (a LOT actually) and pooping with no trouble. Her poop is not solid, though.
