I'm getting REALLY tired of these "deja vu" sensations I keep getting. Can anyone explain them? I get an INTENSE feeling of deja vu, then get extremely nauseous, and it usually lasts for up to 10-15 minutes, and I have weird "after effects" (have a hard time remembering things, like right now, dizzy, etc) for up to an hour afterwards.Been going on for a few months now, and I have as little as one per week and up to a few per day, and there really isn't a pattern to them. I'm having one right now and they really SUCK!! I'm even having a hard time typing this b/c of it. I can't remember what I've typed so I keep having to re-read it over and over again. I'd really like for them to stop. Any day now would be nice. Oh, and these "spells" (as I call them) usually stop me in my tracks. Most of the time I can barely even talk through them. *groan*

Does anyone have any clue what could be causing these? It's getting really old. It even affects me so much, instead of posting a new thread I posted this as a reply to another one without realizing it.

Wow that's bizarre. I'm so sorry!
I'd do a little web searching, I think - maybe look for some kind of paranormal or psychics forum or something. I've definitely had deja vu before - sometimes it comes in batches where it happens frequently over a period of a couple of weeks, then not again for a couple of years. But I've never had any of those side effects from it.

I'd see if any of those are common with psychic experiences - otherwise I'd consider seeing a Doctor to find out if you have some type of physical problem - thyroid? heart? Neurological?
Maybe the deja vu is part of a series of symptoms, and not what's causing it?

Sounds like it could be a partial seizure. You need to see a neurologist, in my opinion.

Good luck,

^Seconded.

You have some other health problems that could be causing this - first thing I'd suggested is getting some blood work done.

I can get similar symptoms on the day my blood pressure falls really low and I know people get episodes like what you're describing when they're hypoglycemic - because their brain is being starved of glucose which can set them up for seizures.

That was my first thought too. I have a friend who would have seizures due to a brain injury from when he was a child but didn't start having them until he was in his late 20's early 30's after his brain matured. He didn't have the falling down twitching kind of seizure..his were more like you describe. He said it was like 2 realites superimposed on each other and afterwards would be disoriented, experience nausa and sever headaches. Don't mean to scare you but I would get it checked out with a neuro specialist. One good thing is his at least was easy to control with meds and he could live a normal life (once they figured out what was going on).

You really need to be checked out by a doctor. I don't want to scare you either, but I started having similar symptoms 5 years ago before I had a small stroke. I went months of occasional dizzy spells, vision problems and trouble concentrating. The stroke was 5 days after my 48th birthday.

Are you taking any medication like for high blood pressure? I was and wasn't as diligent as I should have been about taking them. Now I am on another BP med and also a blood thinner. Get checked out!!!!!!

No, but I have Addison's Disease and tend to have low blood pressure. My husband thinks it might be a lack of protein, b/c I prefer veggies and carbs and can sometimes have little to no protein in my diet for a couple days at a time. I also take a sleeping medication every night, Ambien, and maybe this is a side effect? My doctor made me an appt with a neurologist, but even though I told them it needed to be on a Tuesday (my day off) the neurologist called on a Thursday and said my appt was the next day. Obviously I couldn't make it. I called my doctor and asked them to reschedule me or find another neuro, but I never heard back.

I have a similar feeling associated with my migraine headaches. I agree with everyone else, a neuro exam sounds like a very good starting point. Good luck!

Have you had your electrolytes checked very recently?

I don't know about everyone else, but I'm inclined to believe that if you have a fairly major disease, any new symptoms should be ruled out as being related to that first. Hence why I mentioned low BP and hypoglycemia earlier..

I know this post is old, but I just wanted to update for anyone that cares.

I finally got a referral to a neurologist and saw him yesterday. He and my primary doctor both think that these "spells" are Complex Partial Seizures. *sigh* I'm having a sleep deprived EEG and an MRI tomorrow and will get the results on Friday when I see the neurologist again. He said they should be easily controlled with medication.

I'm SOOO bummed, though. I was doing some reading about this last night, and I came across something that said that 2 in every 100 babies born to mothers that were on anti epileptic medication had birth defects. That is a VERY high number. Most common was spina bifida. *cry* I'm probably getting ahead of myself, but this will most likely hamper any chances of us ever having another biological child. *sigh* I was even supposed to go in to see my gynecologist about being put on Clomid on Friday. I'm putting that off for now, though. I have bigger things to worry about at the moment.

I'm glad you got it checked out - and that possible diagnosis sounds about right for causing those deja vu sensations. I know the EEG will probably be tough, as will getting that glue off.
I hope they can figure this out and a working treatment for you.

I'm sorry that this is yet another roadblock to you having another child.

My sister is on anti-seizure meds and is FINALLY 4 months preggo with her first AND she is in her mid-30s. It can happen for you! And don't worry about the birth defects until you would know for sure! Trying to get pregnant and stressing is the worst thing you can do! Good luck!

Hey....we all care! I'm glad that you got checked out. Have you still been having your deja vu feelings? Did you talk to the neurologist about your wishes to become pregnant? He may be able to prescribe other medications that are safer during pregnancy, or if your symptoms have lessened or gone away, you may be able to delay treatment until after your pregnancy. Good luck...I'll keep you in my prayers.

Yes I have continued to have them. I started documenting them on Dec 4th, and between then and the 7th of March I had around 30 of the "spells". I haven't had any since the 7th, but for some reason they tend to congregate around the beginning of each month. That's the only pattern I've seen to them. I'm sure I'll start them up again soon. This last month was the worst so far though, I had 10-15 of them in my sleep one night. Usually I only get one or two of them in a group.

I didn't talk to him about getting/being pregnant b/c it didn't occur to me at the time. I'll be sure to ask him on Friday, though.

Being on anti-seizure medications does not always cause birth defects. I have a friend that has epilepsy who took dilantin throughout all of her pregnancies. The doctor wanted her to stop the dilantin but her neurologist nixed the idea as several grand mal seizures per day would cause more harm to the baby then the medication would. She ended up having four healthy sons (one set of twins). They boys are all in their 20's now.
