She is a friend of Kay one of the sphynx people I know. Terry saved Kays fathers life. They have mentored Kay and her husband in CFA. This is posted in all the sphynx groups and the CFA sites. I think it is great what they are doing. In fact another sphynx person that me and Brooke know from another list is doing the same thing with Piglet.
Teri and I know this works, because we had a Red Cross certified bengal therapy cat when we lived in Hawaii.
These animals are so important to patients in hospitals.
What a great article! Dogs have been doing therapy for years, and now it seems more and more cats are starting to do it, which is just awesome!!
And, I might be a little bit biased when I say this, but Sphynx are so well cut out for it because of their outgoing, friendly, and fearless personalities - no one is a stranger to them! It's also pretty cool that they can take a hairless kitty to kids dealing with cancer and hair loss, and show them that they can look different (without their hair) and be unique and be loved unconditionally.
Like mews2much mentioned, we know someone from another list who does this with her Sphynx, Piglet, and she tells us that Piglet seems to love it just as much as all those patients who look forward to seeing her every week.
that must be so rewarding for the owners to be able to share their lovely cats and brighten people's day.
I love how they started too- in a children's oncology ward. They wanted to show the kids that you can be hairless and still be beautiful.
I think this is a super idea. My Sphynx is crazy in love with everyone and has the right disposition for this "work" too. I am so glad they are doing this!
I've been trying to get into this with two of my cats but it is difficult to find organizations that will certify therapy cats, and difficult to find places (hospitals/nursing homes etc) to take them...
I found one group who will certify them but they are in California so I would have to find a place to volunteer on my own. I only found one local group that does therapy with cats but they usally use cats from their cat shelter only.
I did animal assisted therapy with my dog for 8+ years in several types of programs including one that actually works with patients on physical therapy using the dogs (with the hospital physical therapist's guidance) and another where kids read to the dogs.
