Hello all,

As the title says, two little kittens will be adopting us on Friday. I am a patient person, but time seems to be standing still. Come on Friday! LOL

Anyway, we'll be adopting Fig & Newton from Pet Refuge on Friday, and I couldn't be any happier. The kittens are a little over two months old and we'll be spending the next two days kitty-proofing the house and getting ready for them.

I haven't had a cat since I was maybe 12 or 13, so hopefully things haven't changed too much in the last 25 years.
Great site you have here. I look forward to learning from y'all and taking part in the community.

If you have any questions for me, feel free to fire away. Have a good one!

Dave

P.S. Bonus points to any mod that changes my username from "Dave in the bas" to Dave T or ditb. I go by Dave in the basement everywhere, but I didn't realize there was a character limit on usernames. Rookie mistake, I know. Oops!

Fig & Newton are such cute names, especially together.
I'm glad you're giving them a furever home. Hopefully we get to see some pics of them

those good childhood associations tend to come back in the warmest of ways, at least in my experience

Ah, I loooove their names
The wait is always the hardest - I met Squeaky on Saturday and didn't get to bring her home until Sunday. That was the longest 24 hours in my life!

Here's to hoping they'll fit right in and ya'll will have a wonderful time together

Wow, you are quick! Thanks so much for the friendly replies!

I should note that Figs and Newton are great names...but my kiddos didn't like them as much as we did so we are christening them Calvin and Hobbes.

Looking forward to seeing pics of the new little ones (I'm a visual person; that's why I'm a photographer). Congratulations, Dave and welcome to the CatSite.

Hi Dave

Welcome to TCS.

And congratulations on the "new family!"

For all the things you're getting around for the new ones, don't forget your "baby/kitty" gate. We used the side of a very large cardboard box to keep ours from going down the basement stairs when they were little.

Memories!

I'm looking forward to learning more about you and them.

Thanks again for the great welcome and offers to help. What a great community you have here!

Good call on the kitty gate, too. The guys couldn't wait to try out the stairs to the upstairs, since their foster home didn't have any.

Pics will definitely follow. I'll see you around!

It's Saturday so Fig and Newton are probably already in your home.

Please keep us updated about your new sweetie pies.
By the way....
I love their names.

Oh yes, the boys have settled in nicely, and I am going to try to get some pics up tonight or tomorrow. I just have to be able to pull myself away from them to do so.

Have you had any sleep since they came into your life?

Hi Fig and Newton.

Kittens can be entertaining. When Jeeves was here, my sister (another cat lover) was visiting. She and Dottie turned off the TV and watched Jeeves and the other two cats.

We just adopted our Trina yesterday from Angels Among Us. When she settles in and is willing to spend some time out from under my son's bed, I'll post a pic!

Question... I got her yesterday at 1pm and it appears she still has not peed or pooped yet. I'm checking the house well and no signs of it going elsewhere from the litter box. She did wake me this morning eating her food.

I put a little food in the upstairs bathroom because she was staying up there and not coming down. The litter box is there too but far away from the food. Could this be a problem? I don't intend for the food to stay there and will be moving it as soon as I'm away from this computer.

Any advice, greatly appreciated! Oh, and I see from other posts that the pooping may take awhile as she needs to get comfy, but I worry about the peeing....

For a few days, it might be best to keep her in one small room, such as a bathroom, where her food and litter box are convenient. This is just to let her establish a territory where she feels in control.

So it's not cruel to leave her in the bathroom with the door shut? I considered doing it last night and just couldn't do it and the girl I adopted her from didn't feel it would be necessary. My husband is a smell-a-fobe and I'm worried about her going in the house.

She's 4 months old and the girl that rescued her with the agency had her for about a week....

other comments?

No, it's not cruel. You'd be surprised how quickly being in a small place can bring around a cat to being friendlier and happier. Cats don't like large open spaces, and your house may be terrifying her, which is why she's hiding.

Put her, her food and water, and her litter box in the bathroom. Put in a comfy bed, too, probably a box with towels in it. Then visit her on a regular basis. Sit with her. Talk with her. Read aloud to her. Give her a chance to get used to you, your smell, your voice.

Here's an example of Jeeves, who at the shelter was terrified and hid behind anything he could, and who hid at the back of his carrier.

When I brought him home:

Mrblanche,
Tried putting her in the bathroom this afternoon and she had a fit! Good news is she finally peed, but on the rug! She was not happy in there at all! I think she's found her safe zone in my son's room. She does come out to see us when we go in there and lets us pick her up and love on her and she nuzzles back
I guess I'm going to just have to trust that she'll go to the litter box when she's ready to actually go on her own (without being upset).

Thanks for the advice! She did come out last night to eat from her food bowl and did wander downstairs in the early morning while we were all still in bed.

p.s. I hope I'm not intruding on Dave's post... still learning about how to work the site best!
