What's the Cause?

I actually have two questions so bare with me. The first one is, our 8 month old male feral cat converted to indoors has been meowing like CRAZY the past 2 weeks and over the past 2 days has gotten so bad it is hard to sleep. All day is literally consisting of him jumping up to the window and making low meowing sounds, then jumps down, runs over by us, meows some more and then makes another lap...Is this because he is wanting to get outside and mate? I hope this is the cause because in less than 24 hours he will be getting fixed.

2nd, the past two nights he has been going into other rooms and squatting like he is peeing, but makes a spot about the size of a half dollar which doesn't smell the same as pee, so I am wondering if he is marking his territory or what? He runs down to the litter box every other time. Is this also something that would stop with being fixed?

Thanks in advance!

Re the second question: There might be a urinary issue. You say he "squats" to pee. If he was spraying, he would be standing with his but high in the air. If he has a UTI, this could be a major problem. I would phone the vet asap.

An untreated UTI is life threatening in a male cat.

Please phone your vet.

Yes, to your first question. This will most likely stop within a few days or weeks after he gets neutered (it can take up to 3 months for the testosterone to completely exit his system, but I've never had a cat that took that long, even a 2 year old ex-breeding cat). But, boy did he howl and chirp and drive me nuts before he had his surgery!

The second part, also sounds like he's marking his territory. Does is smell very strong? Does he flick his tail while he's doing this? I'm sure he's leaving his mark here, but usually they will spray vertically (like on a wall) and not as often on the floor, so just watch to make sure he's not having some urinary problems. If he is indeed spraying, most often that behavior will also stop once he's neutered.

Good luck with the surgery tomorrow!

I forgot to mention that the few times he has done this marking of territory was the following...

1st and 2nd time: My girlfriend was sitting on the chair and he made a small spot on the hardwood floor however he then tried to cover it with a paper towel that had fallen.

3rd time: in the closest, a spot the size of a half dollar

4th time: in front of a closet in a different room, and was squatted for about 30 seconds and again, a spot of about the size of a dime. This last time, it looked yellow like pee but I think it smelled worse. He has also been using his litter box so I don't think he is just peeing around the house.

Because of the seriousness of urinary issues in male cats I really, really think you should have him looked at by a vet. It could be marking territory but it could also be a urinary issue. Certain urinary issues in male cat, and females too to an extent, can be deadly very quickly. Stay on the safe side and take him in before he goes to get neutered. You definitely don't want him to have surgery if he's not completely healthy.

If he is in pain or discomfort the constant meowing could also be due to that.

It sounds to me like a urinary tract infection which can be very serious, even fatal in male cats. Marking territory is very different from urination. A spraying cat will back up to an upright (usually) object and rapidly wave their tail from side to side while spraying urine backward. They don't squat while marking. I'd see my vet immediately were he my cat.

Has he been fixed?

Please take him to the vet and checked for a UTI immediately. Unfortunately I have heard of too many male cats passing away to this condition. Their owners were not aware of the signs and for males that can be deadly.

Please keep us updated!
Thanks!

Well 2 of 3 cats are now fixed. That is a relief. I took the above mentioned cat to the vet and explained his peeing so they checked him out and believe he may have lower urinary tract disease (possibly) and that I should get him some urinary tract health type of cat food...So they gave us the go ahead to have him neutered yesterday. He is doing very well, however my gf found a spot in her closet where he peed today on a pair of old pants. Anyone have any ideas? He knows exactly where is litter box is because he uses it throughout the day?

If he has a urinary tract infection, it may take a few days of treatment before his symptoms lessen. Did they give you some antibiotics for the infection?

He is showing the classic symptoms of a blockage or infection. Marking is almost always on vertical surfaces, and it has an extremely strong smell.
