Doing my best to post with a broken, splinted finger, so bear with me.
Smudge, my about 5 month old kitten, is suddenly food aggressive. I do mean suddenly. I realize that he is the smallest out of 5 kitties, and that we did recently take a trip, but this is odd.
Honestly, he is acting like many starved ferals I have taken in. Even if there is no one in the room, if he has something other than dry kibble, he is growling horrendously loud. It happened almost overnight. One day nothing, the next a bit of a snarl when I put down canned food, and the next day he was being very angry and possessive over his food.
And now it's the same with toys. If he finds something he wants to play with, he takes it, hides with it, and starts growling. He has never for a moment been witouit a steady supply of food, except for the 5 hours when he was in the car. Even now, he gets 24 hour dry food just like all the other cats.
He gets pletny of play time, both from me and other cats. I've tried feeding him more canned food, and feeding him seperately from the others. I've tried holding him when he eats, petting him, talking to him while he's growling, but he's gettign worse.
He is due to be neutered in December, which is the earliest the vets here will do it, and I'm wondering if this will help his aggression at all.
Can anyone give me any other reasons for this sudden change? Or any ways to help him get past this. His food aggression is unnacceptable, and dangerous if her gets into something that I need to get away from him.
thankls for replies.
