what to do about gluttonous cat

One of my foster boys - Archie - is a glutton. He is also the cat with the colitis that that we think is due to food intolerances.

He gobbles his wet food and then pushes his way onto the other cats plates.

I come and go at odd hours so there is always some dry set out for him and the five others that live communally. I think he is eating most and sometimes all of it. I have increased their wet and decreased the dry, but there is still this issue.

He was a decent size when I got him, but he has really chubbed out since being in my house. I am concerned not only that he is putting on weight that he doesn't need, but that there could be an underlying problem driving his need to eat.

His coat is great, his skin is fine. He is bright eyed, bushy tailed and full of energy.

Someone on here had suggested a timed feeder - but I have an image of really smart Archie outsmarting the system... hearing that "click" or whatever noise the feeder makes and being RIGHT THERE to devour what ever the feeder dumps into the dish.

I plan on taking him in for a workup... especially for the chronic soft stool. He is on low doze Metronidizole for the time being and I am wondering if that gives him a tummy ache and he thinks its hunger... or that he just LIKES all this food and WANTS it.

Yes - I play with all the cats - fishing pole toys, etc. He doesn't really go after them much. But he and the other cats do run around the townhouse and up and down the stairs a lot. So I think otherwise the problem would be worse.

Any suggestions aside from a vet trip which I plan to do?

Thanks!

I could try separating him at mealtime, but I really dont have a place to isolate him that wouldn't interfere with the other cats freedom and make HIM miserable.

When I have separated him at feeding time before he gobbles his food and then claws at the door and cries his lungs out. I guess I am not strong enough to put up with that.

He was picked up as a stray... and the animal control vet estimated his age as two... so I don't think he's growing. Unless you mean side to side!

Like an upside down box with a cutout in it big enough for the smaller cats and not for him and they can go in there and eat?
