So we got 2 male cats into the shelter on Saturday. They are 4 & 6 years old & front paw declawed. OK, we get declawed cats sometimes. The issue is that they are not neutered. This makes absolutley no sense to me at all. First who the heck would put a cat through declaw without neutering them. Second, what kind of vet would do that? We will obviously have them neutered, but my concern is that they are now used to spaying will we ever get them to stop?

People have NO idea how many front declawed nursning mothers we get. It breaks my heart. I remember one cat 6 years ago when I started - front declawed, not spayed. They had a baby, she began to spray, so they surrendered her. We adopted her out - spayed - but she continued to spray.

We've "adopted" a male stray who was spraying everything in site (outside - can't bring him in). Once he was neutered (at the age of about 2 years) no more spraying.

From what I've read the story varies from cat to cat in various environments - you'll be getting him neutered anyway - so, just hope that you'll get an extra gift of no more spraying.

The rescue I used to volunteer with took in a gorgeous, young solid white male a few years back who was front declawed, but not neutered. We later found out he'd been abandoned by his drug-dealing owner. Nice.

It's people like that (that declaw cats), that makes me fume. <-- Force lightning!
And I keep thinking (just like that bumper sticker) "The more people I meet, the more I like my cat."

I wonder what a human would feel like if they got their natural defences stripped away. (Oh, yeah, that's right, we don't have natural defences, we need artificial defences) That's what declawing does to a cat.

We have had an issue with several non-altered declaws coming in as strays, our vet said its typically done by BYBs who are using them for breeding but dont want them destroying the furniture. Once they stop producing decent sized litters, out on the street they go.

We even found some 4 paw declaws!

I wish vets (if they won't refuse to de-claw altogether, which is what I would REALLY like) would at least refuse to de-claw unaltered cats. There's just no reason for it.

Many vets here wont do a declaw without a spay/neuter being done unless there is a medical reason why one can / can't be done.

The reason this came up is we took in a declaw and assumed she was spayed, because really who declaws a cat without spaying it? She went into heat a week later! Now we check all declaws just in case. The vet hinted that he knew which vets would do it - I am guessing some of the low cost ones, but especially with a female - they can say she is spayed, they wont check
