Do your cats talk to each other?

Today's freekibble trivia question asked who a cat is least likely to meow at and their answer was "other cats".

Now, I have heard this before, but have always found it very untrue. All my cats talk to each other, cats that have gone to the Bridge and the current gang. They greet each other in passing, converse when one joins another in a Spot, and always say hello when they walk into a room and see one another.

I talk to them all the time too, so maybe that's how they got into the habit of it.

Anyone else?

Mine don't. They seem to think actions speak louder than meows, so I would say they interact. Mostly it's Penny using a paw to "hit the air" near Daisy's face.

I have not seen my cats greet each other. If they talk among themselves it's likely a prelude to an argument. I mean the meows get louder, then there's hissing and spitting.

Mine do talk to each other, but it's not meowing, just funny noises which I'm not sure what to call in english. They only meow to each other when they don't see where the other one is. They all communicate with me by meowing though.

Sometimes - but evidently something gets lost in the translation because ears go back.

Yes, not just meowing.

Brrrupts, prrts, peeps, meeps, meows, cussing ( That's Jennie, she's never lost her habit of street language, but it doesn't mean anything, we've all gotten used to it!) a whole range of sounds with which they interact with one another.

I've also heard the "fact" that cats don't purr if a human isn't in the room, and that, too, is a big fat fallacy! My cats purr for each other, or even just because they feel like it, whether I'm in the room or not.

Mine purr to each other while grooming, I can hear them sometimes when I'm not in the same room. I also have one who purrs if he doesn't like something but lets it happen anyway, like clipping claws. It's his way to say that he tolerates it but doesn't do it because it's fun. He also hates to be held, and starts purring if someone does that to him.

Mine have a vocal sound that they use with each other... and its only four of them that do it. The only way I can explain it is like when we humans make the "Hmmm" sound when we are pondering something or questioning something.

What is strange is when they use it. We noticed it originally with Aura when she was a kitten. Arlokk never responded to it and so she would use the sound with us when one of us would sneeze or cough or if she wanted to be pet. She would just meow if she wanted things like food or treats. She only uses the sound to us though, never to the other cats.

When we took in the boys, Max and Jack picked it up from Aura, but they will very rarely use it with us if they want pet, but they use it all the time to each other. It sounds like they are having a little conversation
.

Most remarkably is that we just noticed about a month ago that Gabe had picked it up and he only uses it when playing with Max or Jack, or if he is looking for them. We have yet to hear him direct the sound to us.

Arlokk and Scratchez only meow and its only ever directed at us. Bear meows at us and at inanimate objects, but I can't say I've ever seen him meow at the other cats.

I only have one cat but she talks to me. She is a tortie but maybe somewhere down the line she has a little Siamese in her cuz Autumn talks a lot to me. I was really surprised when I noticed how much she tries to tell me what she wants and she is quite the vocal kitty. I think it's so adorable and I love it except when she talks to me while I'm trying to sleep in the morning :-)

I have only one cat, but I've read that cats communicate with each other and with dogs through body language, because they know they will be understood that way. With humans is when they get vocal...

My indoor five are very vocal with each other as well as with me. Ditto what Otto says, except the street language comes from my outside girl, Sissycat.

Speck trills and chirps to them. The others don't answer. When Daisy first joined our household, Speck would walk up to her a trill, wanting to play and be friends. He didn't understand that she was semi-feral with probably a very sad past. She would go on the defensive and attack every time, so I guess she didn't trust the sweet little trilling sound. (Now, though she still plays a bit rough, they love playing together.)

well Jennie is a rescued stray, who raised a litter all by herself. So she had to be tough. By the time she found me and I started feeding her and subsequently trapped her, her kittens were almost weaned. The babies were totally feral of course, but they were all trapped and brought to rescue for fostering.

When Jennie first came here the other cats were quite taken aback by her language, but one time while she was dressing down Tolly something terrible, while he stared at her in amazement (all he wanted to do was love her!)..well she yawned right in the middle of the harangue. None of us took her seriously after that though I was careful not to let her see me laugh over it.

She's not nearly as profane, but she can still blister the paint on the walls now and then. It doesn't mean anything though....just habit.

i watched the video and Cuddles went from sleeping on my chest to frantically trying to find the "kitties". He homed in on my laptop speakers, then started trying to "dig" under them, all the while making funny noises.

his noises in turn woke up the other kitties, who all swarmed me, also looking for the source of the strange kitteh sounds, all the while talking to each other. I imagine their conversation was something like this.

"Hello?"
"Do you hear that mom?"
"I hears it. Kittehs. Stangers"
"where?"
"Idk."
"that box thing that mom always plays with"
"Yeah, i hears them there too."
"hello?"
"where those strangers?"
"Play?"
